I've seen a few places in the internet that cutting the grass short in the spring and slowly raising the cut height as temperatures increase will produce great results. But I'm a little gun-shy about cutting it too short. I live in the Cincinnati area and have a fescue mix grass on heavy clay soil. I've seen a variety of opinions on this, and wanted to get some solid advice on these cutting heights.

First Cut: 2". Grass is starting to grow and will be done in the next day or two.
Through mid/late April: 2"
Mid April to early May: 2.5"
Early May to Early June: 3"
Summer months: 3.5"

Is this reasonable or do I need to make some adjustments?

One other thing... I've also read that bagging the clippings for the first mow is beneficial as it picks up any of the old, dormant grass leaves. Any truth to this or should I not worry about it?

Cut fescue at about 3 inches. In the heat of summer, especially if you are not getting much rain and you don't irrigate, let it get a little longer, about 4".
