I bought a used trailer yesterday, and in the tow home the brakes on the trailer seemed to apply at their own will. I have a 06 F250 with a tow package but no brake controller in the truck. Im guessing that the problem is maybe in the wiring, Somehow the brakes are getting signal or power but not sure where to start. Has anybody else came across this kind of problem? all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would think something mechanical is happening....Is it just one wheel braking or all?.....All electric brakes do is go on or off....the controller controls how much voltage the electro magnet gets to brake hard or soft.

It was happening on both axle's at first. We dont have alot of knowledge of trailer brakes but they were getting extremly hot. So we stopped, found the adjustment and adjusted them as far out as they would go. Everything seemed to be fine on the highway but as we got on the side roads I kept feeling this bumping as if it was on a pinnle hitch. After a couple of miles I realized the brakes on the rear axle where grabbing every so often with no rhyme or reason. We finally got it home and the brakes were warm on just the rear axle but no where near as hot as they were to begin with. Im guessing that something is crossed on the wire if what your saying is the contoller controls how much brakes to apply. I guess if its just getting an unregulated power signal the brakes would just apply at full force?

Maybe.....I take it you had it connected for lights.....maybe, there is a short in the harness allowing voltage to get into the brake circuit.

You will probably want to pull all the hubs to check bearings anyways so have a good look at the brake system then.....You can see how the magnets are activated with the drum off.

Yes, had the lights hooked up. Thats what im thinking is happening. Im going to do a good once over on the axles and probably end up rewiring the whole thing anyhow. Thanks for your knowledge, Very helpful.

What type of braking system ? electric or hydraulic surge
Does the trailer have a battery backup with emergency disconnect switch?
Do all the lights work properly??

I think its all electric. Yes it battery backup with an emergency disconnect. The lights were dimming as if it had a bad ground but by the time i got home they were normal and all signals were working.

Start with the wiring harness, inspect for cuts, kinks and breaks
Make sure the emergency break away system operates correctly.

And melted spots. It sounds like the brake light wiring was/is shorting to the brake wiring.
