Going to buy a new Toro tomorrow.

A 60" Z500 27hp Kohler is 7,999

A 60" G3 29 hp Kawasaki is 10,999.

I have never ran Kohlers, always used kawi's and I know for a new mower from 27 kohler to 29 kawi is about a 1000 more. A 27 kohler G3 is 9,999.

1) Is it worth the 2,000 more for the G3
2) Is it worth 1,000 more for 2 more hp and a kawi?

Working at a toro dealer. I'd go for the G3, drive both, the G3's handling is top-notch. The G3 has a 1 year longer warranty. That 29 Kaw is a big block, it has an extra 125cc, and 7 more lb. ft of torque, compared to a standard 27 koh or kaw, the 29 is a beast!

I dunno I think Toro/Exmark have gone nuts with their pricing on those new models. The Toro warranty is silly. Who cares if its an extra year...they only give you 1200 hours... Honestly have allways thought the Toro's were overpriced since you arent really getting anything more than other brands we sell. That Z500 is probably a pretty good deal.

Make sure the z500 has the Turboforce deck. If it has the 7 gauge deck it will have significantly smaller hydro pumps, and will feel like a slug.

The G3 has a trans built by toro and exmark, no hydro hoses to worry about, the filter change interval is 500 hr on the trans. The Z500 is a good buy, it's more in line with the rest of the market in its design and engineering. Just drive them both and decide for yourself. I did drive them both, and I would get the G3. However, each man is entitled to his opinion, and each opinion is valid.

With the 7 guage, top speed is limited to 8.5 mph on small 10cc pumps. With the turbo force, you got 12cc and 10 mph.

The pump/motor units are built by Parker on the G3.

I would also suggest looking for a used diesel Toro with either a Kubota or a Diahatsu. I have purchased 2 this year, both low hour machines. They are a lot more machine.

I too plan to get a new Toro this week or next. I was originally going for the G3...25hp, 52 inch Turboforce with bagger. However, I've decided to go with a Z500 with 27hp, 52 inch Turboforce. The G3 is too new and I know there are still bugs that'll show up. Plus, I'm not sold on the rod/deck system. What happens when you hit something rather hard with the deck...will the rods bend? The chain/deck system seems to have more give and flexibility. I asked my dealer if he had the money what mower he'd buy...and...he said the Z500. They have been around for years and have proven themselves. My only complaint...Toro prices are nuts! I like Kohler motors so much better than Kawasaki. I've had three Zs with Kawasaki engines...all 23hp and all were crap. Major issues every 200 hundred hours. My mower with the Kohler Command...2000 hours and not one single issue. I also dislike the gas tank on the G3. Too small of an opening and what happens when the digital gas meter goes bad? You can't open the cap to see how much gas you have left.

Big Fish, Thank you for your consideration.

I think both mowers are really excellent units. I own the dealership and also own a commercial lawn mowing company. All of the units I sell I use on my lawn crews as well.

I would suggest using both units and see which one you prefer. Trying to compare the two is like trying to compare and Ford and Chevy truck. Both are more similar than not but often times brand loyalty gets in the way of a true comparison.

I look forward to meeting you. Thanks.

Dont forget to drive right back down there when you need the mower fixed ASAP cause your local dealer isnt going to help you much then.

Why wouldn't a local dealer want to help? They are still making money off parts and labor. If the machine is under warranty, thats not costing the dealer anything either. Even without warranty, my Toro's are rarely in the shop. I drove to Cincinatti to get one of mine. . . . . Will I again to save a couple grand ? ? ? ? ? ? ? YES!

Toro warranty is good at any dealer nationwide. Toro approves and scantions internet sales as long as the unit is picked up in person from the retailing dealer. Feel free to contact Toro correctly for verification of this. Thanks for your comments.

I am just saying that you wont get pushed to the front of the line when something goes wrong on it as you may if you purchased it there. Also one day you wont have a local dealer. Dealers need to sell machines to keep being a dealer...so if nobody is buying from them, they wont be able to keep their dealer status and then you wont have a local place to get warranty work or parts. Just some things to think about.

I just bought a 2008 Toro Z500 52" 27HP Kohler for $6799.00. It is brand new the only thing I didn't like is that I have to buy the extra scalp rollers for the rear because they are an option not standard. No turbo force, but it is the same deck it just does not have the movable baffle. I would not move it if I had only anyway. Its a great mower, I could not beat the price.

Yes your dealer will honor the warranty, however he will be loyal to his loyal customers and when one of their machines are down have it back the next day or 2 max. He has a policy board up that says if a machine was not bought from 'XXXX' it will be second due in repair to primary customers. I can't afford to have a machine in the shop no more than 2 days, 3 days plus I'm screwed.

Diesel - I have 2, sold 1 today and the other is still up for sale. 90 hours like brand new both physical and mechanical, suspension seat upgrade 9,000. I am switching to gas, the diesel is too heavy for me in the spring and fall particularly early in the a.m. Between 7-930 when sun hasn't gotten above the trees to dry the ground from the rain the night before.

My dealer once only stocked kawi's and now 80 percent of everything is kohler, people are price shopping now, exmark dealer only stocks 27 kohler next lazers to make the price look cheaper so that's why my dealer ordered kohlers because he 'looked' 1,000 higher on the same machine.

Also, since I have been loyal to him everytime I buy a new piece of equipment he gives me 1,000 worth of blades reg. Maintenance parts etc, which only costs him probably 250 but it makes me feel good plus he always knocks off about 5-750 off each mower anyways on top of the 1,000 in parts.

With the money you save, you can always rent a mower if yours is down a day or two. Just a thought. My store rents 60" ZTRs for $69 per day if you have bought a mower from us.

I bought the G3 29hp Kawi...... WOW! My Toro dealers demo was out everyday/all day last year, so I went to the eXmark dealer and they knew of my company and wanted me to try and exmark so bad they pulled a brand new one out and said have it for a day. Guess they thought I would come back with my checkbook. It was a 27 Kohler and I was not impressed with the lack of power last fall, guess I was used to running the diesels. The 29 Kawi is the closest thing to the power of a diesel. The mower is BAD ASS. I absolutely love it.

mcw615,
So how do you like the G3 after a few weeks? I have been looking at a 29 Kohler EFI G3 for $9350 and a Z500 with a Kawasaki Liquid Cooled EFI for about $1,000 less. I would rather have the Kaw engine but I like the G3 design.

mcw615

Two things....

1-G3,G3,G3,G3 ALL THE WAY!!!

2- Go with the 29, forget about the liquid cooled, and do not get the 27! Second, pretend Kohler never existed, the one and only recommendation is the 29 kawi. Don't sucker yourself in for the good deal, if your gonna buy a mower... Do it right!

To make it easy for you, I have/had 2 basically brand new toro diesels $14,000 a piece new.. With around 100 hours on them both, shows how long I had them. Yes I saved some fuel and yes I couldn't mow as early in the a.m. Because of the extra weight of the diesel. I basically gave both mowers away at 9,000 a piece and replaced with the 29 kawi G3, AMAZING mowers! For me I am able to mow on hillsides that I used to have to use the 44" WB on. I'm a tight wade man believe me, but if funds are tight I'm telling you wait until you can get the money for the 29 kawi G3 or you will end up feeling guilty that you didn't.
