This is something you learn before you start cutting.

3in is the average height on northern grasses.

3.5 for St. Augustine & Floritam... sometimes 3.75 when it's hot AND dry. 2.5 - 2.25 for Bahia. I'll cut the St. Augustine & Floritam to 3 or 3.25 before pesticide applications (bugs weeds pre-emergent, etc.).

3.25 - 3.5 in the south.

I'm at about 2.5 to 3 depending on the grass. I cut Bahia as low as it will go but as the season wears on I move the height up to get rid of the clippings.

3" for residential and business. On rare occasions for our business clients on weekly contracts 2.5 or 2.75 if the schedule is calling for a mow but it's not horribly grown. 3.5 or 4 for our undeveloped commercial account.

Big range, depending on the grass, turf management, etc. Some are 2.75, others are 3.25, others are 3.75, and one at 4.25. Several properties have multiple height settings, depending on location and what dictates.

In general, I start out cutting low in the Spring (one or two cuts), raise one setting for a few weeks, another higher setting for the Summer, then start reverse settings in late September, finishing with a low cut again at season's end.

3 inches and sometimes even 3.5 inches depending on the yard and customer. The only time I ever cut lower than that is when I am cutting my own yard, the rest of the time it is for jod security so that the yards don't burn out.

Good grief 4.25"? How slow does it grow or do you cut every 3rd day?

Mostly I run between 3"and 4". I'll run it between 3" and 3.5" now at the start of the season and then bump it up to 4" in mid April to get the grass set for the summer months. Then drop it down again in mid fall to prep for winter and so dethatching and over-seeding is easier.

St.Augustine 4.0 to 5.0. Bahia 2.5. Most around here do not want St.Augustine cut below 4 inches. Some want it a lush thick 5 inches.

No, the higher you cut, the longer it can go between cuts.

For those who say "unless requested to cut lower," are the property owners golfers? My experience has been that those heavily into golf ask for shorter cuts. They see how the golf course is cut, and want the same look on their home lawns. Sorry, doesn't work that way ... Just an observation that I've seen repeated several times.

2.50 or 2.75 but mainly 2.50 with my ZTR. When I'm bush hogging with the tractor, I cut as low as I can without the Bush Hog dragging the ground.

during regular mowing season mow fescue 3.5 to 4 inches. drop down to 3 inches when pluging season starts so i don't have to mow these lawns for two weeks.

Just an observation that I've seen repeated several times. That's how my first customer this year was. Well first customer period(First year in business). They said they wanted it low. So I wasn't sure what low was since it differs from person to person. Start at 2.5" and take a row, lower. Go down to 2.25", lower. I'm thinking good lord! So I take a swipe at 2" and I told them there will be bare spots all over because of how uneven the ground was so we settled with 2.25". I was dissappointed though, I wanted to see some stripes haha. Even at that height I wasn't taking much surprisingly. Any other lawn around here has shot up like crazy.

My normal is 3", I may do mine just a little higher at 3.25" but thats about it.

I do have some customers that want it cut really short, so it "looks better for longer"...the lowest I have ever gone was 1.5", I started at 2.5" and the customer just kept telling me to go lower and lower, eventually I hit 1.5" and thats the lowest my mower went.

I wish more people would listen to me and let me cut at 3", their lawns would look so much better...but why listen to the "lawn guy", he doesn't know anything about the lawn.

Generally I set the deck height to 3" or 3.5" throughout the year unless the customer wants it lower.
