I was out putting doorhangers up today and I saw about a 12X12 sign in a yard advertising another lawn company with an out of area number. When I got back home I looked them up and found that they were from 70 miles away. They were from the OK City area and were traveling to a small town of about 6,000 people. Now I only saw these signs in a few yards but to travel that distance for a few yards can't't be very profitable unless they have a bunch along the way. But even then towns are really spaced out.

If times were tough for them I do not think they would be doing this. Normally when you try to branch out to another city you lose money on that area until you get enough to make it worth it. We service an area that is 50 miles from us. We lost money on this area for the first 3 years. It was getting out there, and getting people to see us out there, that has now gotten us enough clients to make this area profitable.

Normally this kinda move is a money drain for the first few years.

If anything, it would show me times are improving.

You can't always judge by the phone number either. I still maintain a Maryland phone number and I moved from there in 2006.

Understood but I looked them up on the Internet to get their info. The number is what drew my attention initially.

May be it is like Lawnlandscape said they are expanding to new areas. But 70 miles seems like a long distance but I really do not know how big of a company they are either.

I can not think of a reason why a compay would use a number from a different area where they are located. That would be a bad business move.

With that said, I would be 98% sure their number is from the area where they are based.
