In my area, and neighboring areas, about a third of companies are using Standers! I watched a child operate one a week ago, and a girl in her late teens operate one today.

I believe this is the standard for future mower configurations.

Any one else notice this trend?

thats what i ride on all day. only thing that needs improving is reverse(more power). once thats done see ya later riders.
thats my 10 cents.

Yeah, that's what is going on in my area too. I don't remember the last time I saw a crew drive by without one.

Corban,
It seems like in are area mostly buntons and standers is what i see on other trailers. I dont see many riders where i live (Johnson County). it seems that they are mostly 21s, wbs and standers. One time on a trailer i saw 4 standers. I think theyt were 36, 48, 52,61 but what i dont understand why would you want to have a 48 and a 52 they are to close in size for me.
Just my thoughts

There is only one stander, a Great Dane, in my small area. Mostly Bobcat ZTR and walk-behinds followed by Exmark. JD

A lot of crews here have the Wright stander machines. I can not see them being used anywhere that there are not better machines to do the job with. I have demoed one and it was a nice, wellbuilt machine, but where will it give you an advantage? A conventional ZTR is easier on the body (sitting), will go into all the same places(with same deck size), and will get you under trees and shrubs where the stander can not mow. For smaller yards, a Walker is much more manueverable, just as fast as a Wright(with speedup kit), and you can change deck heights in seconds on a Walker. The stander did not do hillsides any better than my ride-on mowers. In fact, it was worse, as you have a higher center of gravity when you are standing on the thing. I would really like to see some comments from owners of these standers that clearly show what type of mowing job they are the best machine for. What am I missing here?:)

There is nary a Stander in sight around here and the factory is right up the road. It's all Exmark, Gravely and DC.

The standers are not intended to replace ZTRs, rather they are in direct competition with hydro WBs with velkies. The beauty of the Wright Stander is in its size and durability. The machine is incredibly short, giving it a distinct manuverability edge over WBs with velkies. The other advantage the Standers have is in their construction. They are seriously overbuilt.

If you compare a hydro WB with similar power and a velkie, you would spend $4500-5000. For only $500-1000 more, or $100-200/year (5yr life expectancy), or $.125-.25/hr, you can have a stander which is less fatiguing and overall more productive.

It is not fair to yourself to compair a stander to any rider. THEY ARE NOT COMPETING AGAINST THEM. ZTRs are always going to be arround, but the stander is in serious contention to wipe out the WB.

Jason, you got it. Everytime the topic of standers comes up they immediately get compared to riders. Although some comparisons can be made, the better comparison is a wb with sulky as you said.

MUCH shorter and more compact then a wb w/sulky. This is a plus on small lawns as well as small trailers.

I am demoing one tomorrow. I am attracted to it because of the light weight, ability to quickly get off machine and assist if stuck, compact design, and price. I wish it had a floating deck like the sentar but I am willing to deal.

I have been demoing one for the last week and think it is a great machine. My order is going in for a 52" with a 25 kawi. We have been running 2 48 " wbs but with this 48" stander it saves us at least an hour a day running the stander and the wb.

I just purchased a 36" stander a week ago. The only things I don't like about it are the height adjustments and the fixed deck. This mower replaced a 36" gear drive toro and there is no comparison. Unless the property is very large I use the stander instead of my dixie chopper. It is definetely my favorite piece of equipment now.

How do the standers do on hillsides?? Had my wb on a steep bank right down into a lake today, just got done raining and was slick. the wb was wanting to slide, but i managed. Can't even think about putting anything else on that lot without it going in the water. don't get me wrong, the standers are probably a higher production machine than a wb, but they are in a class all their own. just goes to show there is a machine made for evey job, the trick is finding the one that adapts best to yours.

Jason mentioned that the stander is designed to wipe out the WB market....someone else said on another post that the NEW Wright product coming out is a WalkBehind. Won't that be interesting?

eXmark & Toro rule the PanHandle market, but we are seeing more Wright products. I like them both.

MacLawnCo, I do not think the stander is going to wipe out the WB market. You can do hillsides with a WB that you could never do with a stander. A Walker is a better replacement for a WB as they are faster,(with speedup kit), & more manuverable than a WB with a sulky. Walkers are easier to change height settings. Walkers offer side discharge, rear discharge, mulching, and grass collecting all with the same power unit, and deck changeout can be done in 5 min.
I am still not convinced that a stander will outperform a Walker, a big ZTR, or is the best replacement for a WB. Try again.:D

Mowingman,
I wouldn't say a Walker is a better replacement than a Stander. It is no more manuverable than a Stander, less actually. It can rear discharge and is easier to change heights but those are the only things you can't do with a Stander. Sure a stander doesn't bag as well as a Walker, but how many of us bag that often? A Stander can't follow every hill a wb can but it will do a little better than a Walker on hills(when you lean into it). And the biggest advantage, a Stander costs half of what a Walker does. I'm not saying a Stander is for everyone, but I definetely think it is a better replacement for a wb than a Walker like you suggest. I would only buy a Walker if I bagged A LOT. By the way I have the slowest Stander made and it goes 7.2 mph without having to spend even more money on a speedup kit and I don't think they are going to wipe out the wb market either.

Very interesting timing on this topic, just today I saw one of the larger outfits using theses standers (first ones I have ever seen)For the last several years it has been all Walkers around here...but it looks like things may be changing.

:) Sorry throwing my opinion in so late, here it is thought: Have had my 52" Stander for 6 months now. Love it! Does everything it was desighned to do.

Have a Snapper 36" as well. When it comes to getting down in a ditch and getting close to sticky situations sure, I'll put my WB in most of the senarios. On large hills or slopes? Stander all the way.

Demo'd every riding ztr this town has to offer- the result? The Wright Stander has an unqualified more secure feel than any seated Z in dicey situations. No way you can 'get off' a seated Z as fast as you can a Stander.

My Stander is so impressive I'm considering trading down my 36" Snapper to a smaller 32" WB.

Sheppard

I don't have a Wright Stander(there are no dealers around) but I do have a new John Deere 657 QuickTrak. It has a Kawasaki and the new 54inch 7Iron deck. This mower mows awesome. I just put in my order for another one. I run ztr's walkbehinds and now standers too. They all have their own place in the commercial lawn care business. Although my stander has kept the walkbehind in the trailer alot lately.

I had not heard much about the Deere version, but would demo one to compare against a Stander when my Exmark WB should show its age.

Good pros and cons from everybody.

The JD standing unit is the Great Dane- only thing different is JD's 7 Iron deck. Period!

Everything else is the JD.
