Do you ever wish that you could switch from the mulch mode to the discharge mode on your w/b pushers without having to stop the mower, search and find the discharging funnel, install funnel, restart the mower and resume?
Well, I've been playing around again. :) Here's some pictures of a brand new mower that I've disconnected the safety, blade disengager cable thingy and attached it to the mulch plug. Now, anytime that I want to switch modes - all I have to do just squeeze the lever which is under spring tension that will go back to the mulch mode after it's released. I tryed it out yesterday and it didn't miss a beat.
And to all ya'll yanks up there, "yes," I am a red-neck. :)

Hey thats a Yardman 106C. They are a great push mower,we've been using them for about 3 years now. 6 hp to a 20 inch cut plenty of power. Thats a neat idea, I hadn't even given that one a thought!

I've always wondered why people still use push mowers. They're cheap, sure, but my self propelleds last for a few years before they die. Based on how many lawns they mow and the difference in price, it's just a few pennies more to have the ease of use and safety of a self-propelled model. As for reliability, I've used Toro's for 10 years and never had one fail even once because of the drive system. Usually the engine wears out.
They're safer because I think you're less likely to wrench a back (if you hit a rut or hole) or strain something if the mower is doing the work for you. They reduce fatigue, of course, and I find it's easier to concentrate on mowing straight lines when I don't have to push it.
Is there a reason to use push mowers than I'm not thinking of?
Other than small grass islands or the like I can't imagine using a
push mower period. My guys hate using them. I guess they're
just spoiled by the productivity of a turf tracer walkbehind.
My "PUSH" mower is only a trim mower, and pool mower. The one pool area I mow is only as big as your bedroom. Self propelled would only hinder its performance in tight areas. The other use is a property that has finely shaped 15' white pines that are touching at ground level with a fence right behind them. My 48" WB cant even work here, so the LB gets the call to duty. Push it under, pull it out.....REPEAT about 100 times (25 of these trees!).
I also use the LB PUSH mower on real steep banks. Push it up, gravity back towards you....Repeat.
A self propelled would be a hinderance for MY situations, not to mention the weight of the unit. For that pool job, I have to physically lift the mower up with my hands, and walk up over the retaining wall. Don't want it any heavier than it needs to be!
Plus, pushs are cheaper, and no more parts that "could" break.
THATS WHY :D
