View Full Version : Walker acting weird while mowing

I have a 2000 Walker 26 EFI shutting off while mowing. It will run all day without the blades running, but as soon as blades are engaged the amp meter goes from 14 volts down to 0 and it motor shuts off. Could it be battery? Or safety switch? I am puzzled. Let me know what you guys think.

I,d rule the battery out, especially if it starts without any problems. Check the connection for the safety switch and wire for any cracks or deterioration

It starts with some hesitation. Turn the key and it takes about 10 seconds to start, no bells and whistles for about 10 seconds then it starts up. Engage the blades and the amp meter takes a dive until it bottoms out and then it stalls. It ran fine all day then the last hour it started this.

So it is turning over but just not firing[starting]? How old is the battery? I,m getting ready to start some maintenance with mine and I am starting with the simple solutions[possible] first. Maybe test the battery just for peace of mind, but I do not get why it runs fine until the last hour. These Walkers are full of odd mysteries

Sounds like a short circuit, or a bad or loose connection somewhere.

No it starts back up with some hesitation. Then runs fine until the blades get engaged, then the amp meter goes from 12/14 volts down to zero until it stalls. Then repeat the process. I was thinking a short in the charging system, but why would it only act up when the blades are engaged? It's not an electric clutch, just tightens the belts. May be the oscilator in the grass pack?

Operator presence safety switch, either a malfunction or a short,
only thing I can think of that would shut your mower down upon
engaging the blades especially if it doesn't have a clutch...

But...
What does it have?
A lever?

Just because they call it a PTO switch doesn't mean it doesn't activate the clutch,
although I suppose it could be PTO driven.

It doesn't have an electric clutch... it's a walker so it has the lever that engages the blades. I think it might be the safety switch under the seat. I have to test it to make sure, but that's where I'm starting.

First check the panel. Does it have a 5 amp breaker or a 7 amp breaker. Is that breaker tripping? Now there is a connector at the back of the hopper at the hingers. Unplug the connector. Now try it. If this works you have a short in the hopper. Now look at the battery. Beside the + post you will see a small box looking thing. That is the seat time delay control. Under it is a relay. Unplug that relay. If this helps then it is the time delay. Now the time delay may not be bad. There is a known grounding problem with them. There were grounded by a wire that bolted to the frame using the same bolt that holds the time delay in place. This was found to be a bad ground and has been changed. There are now grounded though the wiring harness. Good luck

Try unplugging or jumping your safeties. Seat, control arms, parking brake. It definitely sounds electrical.

I got the Walker fixed today. I went through all the safety switches and found them ok. The connection that goes to the hopper was bad. I unplugged it and it stopped the electrical drain. So I replaced that connection and all works now as it should and the am meter stays at 14 amps. Thanks to all the guys that offered help with this.
