Have you tried it yet?
Anything will work if it lays the grass over.

No but I hear mud flaps and old tires work well for striping kits. I started a roller striping kit this weekend and it's nice! Too bad I don't have a digital camera yet.

yes i have been using a piese bolted to the deck for 2 years now .i get great looking stripes but today .i learned i wasnt getting the most enhanced stripe that i could get. until i had just got done cutting my lawn and went to wash the ztr and i let the deck down and the rubber was holding it up and one of the kids took it to the barn when i was done and forgot about the deck being down now that made the best stripe it ever made, even with no blades turning so i rised it up just alittle and went over the whole lawn again with out the blades turning wow even greater stripes.
Rodney,
Please start using some punctuation. Your giving me a headache trying to follow what your saying. :dizzy:

Yes, I use a mud flap attached to the back of the mower.

We started using rubber carpet runner (just like grandma used to have in the living room) it seems to be working real well

Jerry,
Isn't that to light? I am going to try a belt from the coal mines. Friend of mine went to see his dad this week and his dad is going to grab me one of the old ones. I'll give it a tryand see if it works.

im not quite getting what you are saying rodey, because of the puntuation problems but i manged to decipher some of it.
You have a piece of rubber (dont know what kind) and you lowered your deck. the rubber got stuck and it held up the deck. your kids drove your mower to the barn with the rubber holding the deck up. it left a nice stripe, so you turned on the blades and did the whole lawn again.
Is this anywhere near what you are trying to say? Please help me understand.

Never used rubber but it should work as long as:
A) it is stiff enough
B) it is close enough to the ground to effectively lay over the blades of grass.
I have a roller on mine that is awesome, it improves my cut quality too. The thing is that I can't go over gravel driveways w/o the roller catching up the gravel and it piles up into the deck and ouch does it ever screw up the cutting edge of a blade w/all that gravel. And it is alittle pain to trailer if your gate isn't long enough or if your deck doesn't lift up enough. I haven't had good luck with chains though and my deck has a curled lip around the outside so a flap wouldn't bolt on easily and besides a flap would catch gravel just as bad as the roller. So for now I will stick with a roller.
I do know that some companys such as Gravely sell rubber flaps as optional striping kit.
There are many many many things that contribute to good striping.
A) type of grass
B) height of grass
C) space between rear tires and edge of deck
D) thickness/thin-ness of grass blades
E) blade speed
F) high or low lift blades
G) some people swear by doubles for better stripes
H) if you have a kit and what kind, and if it's adjusted properly
I) Ground speed
J) Weight of mower
K) rear tire width
L) Even the weather at time of mowing and at time of viewing stripes makes a difference
M) Operator's experience with particular machine
N) many other things too I can't think of off the top of my mind.
Stripes are much more complex than just tire tracks next to each other.
Happy striping!

i have a piese of rubber thats about the same thickness as the sides of a truck tire.
its hangs down below the back of the deck 3" and stripes very nice.
but with the rubber holding the deck up it made a even better stripe with out the blades on.so i went over the whole lawn with no blades turning.
i think i will do that ever now and then to make even nicer stripes .since it dont take long running 10 mph.or i could make the rubber 6" below the back of the deck.

To reply to your question Seasons, we double it up and liquid nail it together. But your right a single layer is to light.

I used to use that coal mine conveyer material cut in six inch heights for door sweeps on commercial establishments. I think I still have some. That stuff would be great for striping. I guess it could be attached to some strap steel and then attached in some way to the frame of the mower. It would look kinda like the eXmark flap I guess. I wonder if just putting it between the wheels will do it, or if I should just go ahead and make it full width behind the rear wheels.

i put it on the rear deck . works good there and it keep the blades from hitting those tree roots that stick up around some maple trees.
my compliments rodney. u just demonstrated the difference between
being good at english,an being a smart
man. to cool bud.:)
Toro makes one for our zmasters and it works fairly good
I am using an old conveyor belt for a striping kit on Turf Tiger. Seems to work relatively well. Used 3 layers 6" wide and sandwiched them between two pieces of steel. Mounted them to the back lift bars of the deck just behind the gear box for the blades. The unit hangs between the back tires.

no this is nothing like toro , theres is henged mine is not it bends what ever direction you are going and has a lot of presure on the grass. toros just floats on the grass.
