I am looking at a John Deere 820A ZTR; 26hp kawasaki; 54" 7-iron deck with 12" wide tires. Local dealer wants $8,400. Is this a good price on the 820?

Also, He wants $7,200 for the 810A 22hp/48" This one has 9.5" wide tires

sorry guys. I meant to say 920 and 910. I am NOT looking at the 800 models.

Those prices sound pretty good to me. I'd go with the 920 over the 910 though

I have two questions:

1. Is the 48 or the 54 a better all around deck
2. Will the 2.5" wider tires on the 920 substantially improve stability on hills and/or
provide a noticeably smoother ride over bumpy terrain?

WOW! JD must be proud. I just sold a brand new Mini ZT 26 HP 48" cut for $3500 and some tax. A 26 HP 50" ZT with 3/16" deck and power deck lift is aroud $5000. I noticed a 925 with 25HP was $12,050 at our local dealer. OUR 28HP compact diesel (CAT)60" cut $9999 With suspension seat and easy ride suspension.

There really isn't too much of a difference between the two deck sizes. The 54" will give you a little more trim edge, but there really isn't much, but more than a 48" deck. I've got the 54" deck on my 925 and I think its a very good sized deck for the properties I do.

I'm not too sure how much more hillside stability the wider tires will give you, but they really can't hurt anything. My 925 sticks to a hill like you wouldn't believe. I had a bob-cat mower for the past several seasons and it had 8.5" wide tires (pretty narrow), I thought it did well on hills but it would slide a bit. My new Deere with the 12" wide tires doesn't slide at all. Also the wider tires will make for less rutting in wet/soft conditions.
