I took apart a GX160 to inspect the camshaft lobes. When I go back together I assume that the two round marks( one on the camshaft gear and one on the crankshaft gear) will meet together where the gears mesh. I am getting backfire and smelling gas, Any advice appreciated
Why were you looking at the cam lobes? Yes the dots should be put so they line up.

Engine is running rich and fouling plugs. I have a new carb and adjusted the valves. An internet search found a thread about people with a similar issue a few years ago and his was due to the cam lobes not being in spec. Mine, however measured fine. Thanks for the help.

I would suspect possible valve or valve seat problems. Compression tested? Carbon Buildup?
