View Full Version : Kawasaki Engine Idling problems

I have a Exmark TTHP with a 17HP FH500V Kawasaki engine on it. Sometimes it runs great with full throttle all the time, but others times I will have the throttle up all the way, then I engage the blades and the engine doesn't throttle up all the way. The past couple of days this has happened when I first start the mower, then after about 15 minutes it starts running fine with full throttle. It is very sporadic, sometimes it will just kick into the "full throttle" for a couple of minutes then it will go back to it's low idle stage again. I have changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and I even sprayed a little carb cleaner in the carb. I have tried everything I can think of and It is still happening. It really slows me down because I have to go slow and go over things twice when my mower is running such a low idle.
Your advice is greatly appreciated!!

Sound like a coil problem again.... (like one of the coils isn't firing right) while your running the mower and when it starts acting like its idling down, pull the coil wires off one at a time and see if that makes any difference in the idle or if the mower shuts down completely,....mine seemed to run like that awhile back and when I engaged the blades it was like it would idle down, and I found one of my coils wasn't firing.

I think you may be right. I have been reading some other posts about engine idling problems and it seems that it is either the coil or the fuel pump. I started the engine and pulled out the boot on the spark plug on the left side and it stayed running, i replaced the boot, then tried with the right side and the engine cut off. I'm not sure what this means? Does it mean i definitely need to replace the coil.

absolutely that coil is bad. replace and you should be good to go.

Yup it would mean replace the coil in my book,...if the coil is really bad, while the engine is running and you pull the spark plug boot off you can see the spark jumping to the plug on the good coil and when you do it on the bad one you'll see nothing (in most cases)

An intermittent operating coil? That's interesting; I was under the
impression that an ignition coil was a GO/NO GO type component.

called the dealer and they had a coil in stock...i bought it, changed it, now it's running like a champ..

ok..I'm back to my old problem... It was running fine the last couple of days until today. It started the intermittent idling again. Like it did before it comes in spurts--for five minutes it will run bad and then for ten or fifteen it will run like it should.
Could my wires have a short or a bad connection? (I'm not electrical minded)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Check the wires running off the coil to the kill switch and see if any are pinched or worn through and touching any metal, I found one like this on mine and it would short out as I was cutting , just enough that it would run rough . Also someone had given me some advice on my recent rough idling and told me (as the mower was running with the engine plastic cover off) spray some carb cleaner around each intake gasket, (near the intake heads) and if the rpm's change you have a leaky gasket.....that might be worth a quick check for you. ...in the mean time I'll still rack my brain and see if I can come up with anything else to look for, if that doesn't fix it.
