View Full Version : 7.3 diesel mileage?

What do you guys expect or have gotten out of your 7.3L diesel. My F250 diesel has 260,000. I have been putting a lot of money in it but nowhere near what a new one would cost.

I have a 2001 F-250 Crew Cab swb with a PSD. I get between 19-20 on long freeway trips unloaded (I don't have the mileage computer as I have an XLT, so this is hand calculated by filling up to the neck each time). Combined highway and in-town driving, I get 15-16.5 and towing a 5,000 travel trailer, I get 11-12.5. This is a stock truck, no intake or exhaust mods...yet :) and no chip. I have just over 10k miles on the truck and got it October, 2001.

Sorry, I meant the total amount of miles you expect to get out of a 7.3L diesel.

I hope to get 300,000 miles out of mine. Wife told me, "You can get a new truck, BUT, it must be a crew cab and its gotta last you 15 years !!!" I figure with meticulous maintenance, I should get 250,000 - 300,000 relatively trouble free miles out of it.

If you're going to keep your truck for the long haul I'd install a remote bypass oil filter of some sort and a coolant filter to keep the sca levels in check get the gauges BEFORE you go crazy with a chip or injectors. If you have questions check out ford-diesel.com.;)

Thanks, Chopper, I've been a member since 6 months before I bought the truck :)

Use some coolant additive to fight cavatation, change the oil every 2500 miles and the engine ought to last 300K miles. I have 198K on mine, everything is original except for the water pump and a handful of glowplugs, and the batteries.

change the oil every 2500 miles
I'm thinking you must have a lot of idling time or stock in Shell Oil. ;)
Everyone who I know who has their oil tested is good for 5000 to 6000 mile oil changes.

I am hoping for 300K. The amount of miles is NOT what bothers me. It is all the STUPID electronics these trucks have. And how you are up turd creek when they go out.
As for every 2500 miles I would never get out of the shop if I changed oil that often. I have a 2000 F250 and just turned 97K tonight. I am running Amsoil synthetic, they recomend 12,500. I am changing at 10K just so I can remember when it was done.

Cavitation is a big problem with the 7.3. Did you use a coolant additive? If most of your driving is highway miles you stilll have plenty of miles left on your engine. 300k is quite a few miles for your engine. An overhaul is probably around 3k and you still dont have a turbo. Sell the truck now while it still runs and buy a dodge with a cummins. Cummins engines are good for many more miles than an international engine.

Yes, cummins is a fantastic engine... the only thing that stinks is that they put them in such an unreliable truck. And your out of luck if you want any kind of GVW.
Since this thread was about milage of a 7.3- I'd be quite happy if mine lasts 250-300k.... I think by that time it will have paid for itself a few times over.
