Its hard to say, you need to check the upper crank bearing for play, if it has play in it your block is shot likely.
You may just need a new seal though.
You wont know until it is apart.

If block is shot what kohler motor should be used to replace the kawasaki ? Is this common for a 500 hour motor? Thanks for the help

Depends, what is the model and serial # of your mower? I need to make sure we offered a Kohler on it.
As to the 500 hours, I wouldn't say its common, but Kawasaki did have some blocks that did this a few years back.

We didnt start using Kohler engines on the Super Z until 2003 (your mower is a 2002 model), it was a 27hp.
It is a Kohler model # CV740, with a spec # of 0028.

Thanks for the info and help, so the kohler motor #'s above will work on this mower? Thanks again

Yes they will, it is the exact model and spec we put on that mower.
The wiring harness may be different though, you need to look it up, you can look on our website at your parts manual, it should show the Kohler wiring harness also.

Before you go crazy on this issue. I have a 2003 super mini z with the 25hp KAW.
I had a similar oil leak I ignored for quite some time. So I finally broke down and removed the flywheel.
I found multiple leaks.
Yes the crankcase seal was leaking a bit but I never replaced it.
The oil breather plate was loose and the gasket was damaged due to being loose so I just used some gasket material and replaced it.
The real eye opener was the oil pressure switch which is just above the oil filter was leaking like crazy. Replaced the sensor and most all of my oil leak disappeared.
One of these days I may break down and replace the crankcase seal. But the leak is so slight that by the time I do a oil change I never need to top off the oil.
But it does foul up the cooling fins. So I just spray some degreaser on the engine every so often.
My 2c.
