View Full Version : Honda 24HP Vs. Kohler 25HP

It is almost time to repower one of my Gravely 260Z machines.
I have found a Honda 2Cyl vertical for about $1100 vs $1500 for a new Kohler CV25.
The Kohler runs well but is really hurting for HP lately. It doesn't burn oil, just is low on power.
I've always been impressed with Honda engines. The 24HP vertical has an oil filer, too.
Has anyone used this engine? Would it be a suitable replacement or a pain to install? Longevity?
Has anyone done this conversion? I understand the shaft diameter is 1 1/8" on both Kohler and Honda.

We started repowering our eXmarks with Hondas 8 years ago.
After all, Hondas are better than Kohlers, right?
WRONG! We could not have been more disappointed.
After Kohler fixed all their little hick-ups in the late '90's, they are the best big a/c engine (20-27hp.)

I have a friend who runs a bunch of Honda engines on various type of construction equipment and pumps. He has been very disappointed with all of their higher HP engines. He has found that once you get above about 10 HP, you need to go with Kohler or Kawasaki.:(

The honda larger HP motors suck. Stay away. Parts are nearly impossible to get when you need them. The small honda motors are awesome, but not the larger ones. Stick with Kohlers.

Honda 4-13 hp are awesome. (At least the horizontal shaft engines.)
18-24 hp: I have yet to speak to anyone (my mechanic included) that has run one for any length of hours that had anything good to say about it.

I have used Hondas and really like them but I would almost choose a Tecumseh over a Kohler 25.
I own other Kohlers and really like them but I will NEVER own a 25 again.
Cut 2 Please

I prefer the Kaw. engines. On the small gas powered marine generators that Kohler produces, they put Kawasaki engines on them. I am not sure what the horsepower is but it looks almost identical to the V-twins that they use on mowers. I wonder why Kohler does not use their own engine on their generators? Something to think about.
We have Kawi's on about 7 or 8 of our mowers. We have had nothing but problems with all of them. We have an excellent maintenance program as well. Switching to Kohler from now on..
