Hi there, ive looked through this site for a few weeks now and you all have some good advice. I am looking to get something to save me time mowing and saw this Ariens ZT on Craigslist. I guess what I'm asking is does this seem like a good deal, what should I look for when I go look at it. He says its about 8 years old, 16hp 48" cutting deck and was just used to cut his residential property. They just put new bearings in the deck drive and new belts, and had it serviced. He says the only reason there selling is they bought a bigger mower due to there lawn size. Go easy on me, just don't want to throw away money if its not worth it. Thanks in advance.

That looks more like a homeowner ZTR in my opinion. Maybe in your area there aren't any of the deals I hear of folks getting but I have seen lots of 48-52 wb for around that price. Up closer to $2K widens the selection even more. Never used an ariens but aren't they sold at the Depot or Lowes?

Ya its hard to find any commercial dealers this far north. So your saying for a homeowner model, thats not too good of deal?

I have driven that model and believe it had one hydro pump.
If it had two it was very lacking
The one I drove had very poor performance on small hilly turf.
So going sround trees on small hills was a waste , as it would not go.

For cheaper you could get a hydro rider
But either way that Airens is over priced.

Hmmm, that is interesting. I am just soo limited on what I can get my hands on up here. I was also looking to maybe get the Cub Cadet 33" walk behind. Im 270lbs, so maybe that Ariens wont be a good fit for me huh? Out of the two, CC and Ariens maybe the CC would be a better choice.

At the moment I have 13 yards, some a half to 2/3 of an acre and a full time job so I would like to speed my time up. I would like to stay under $1500 but these are my only options for now. Mowing sometimes 9 hours a day with 22in toro and a full time job can tire me out.

I have a 42" version of that mower with a timed deck. I've used it as a residential mower for 10 years and I'm using it commercially now. I have a mulch kit on it and it leaves a nice cut, but it can be taxed if the grass is to tall. My property was very rough when I got it and some of the properties I mow now are also. I go through a cogged belt at least every two years at 49 - 75 bucks a pop and I worry every time I hit something. That's the only real problem I've had with it. It is no powerhouse but we mow our place much faster than my neighbors do with their lawn tractors. The 48" deck may not be a timed deck, but I'm not certain.

Well the decision is already made up for me. He just emailed me and said it sold. Saves me from driving two hours. If im careful and treat that CC 33" well and maintain it, should it last me a few years?

I would buy just a regular lawn tractor of some sort but find it hard to make my turns at the end of a row. Any suggestion?

If you're looking for your main mower stay away from that 33
I have no problem mowing lawns with a 42" tractor. You need something to cut your time down.
Check this out, it has the power and deck size to get you some money.

Why don't you get a commercial 48" walk behind with a sulky? It would be alot faster than a lawn tractor and would last a long time. You could pick up a good used one for around 1,500-2,000.

It is not hydro but on the same craigslist...

A scag 48 walk behind with sulky

Granted it is from May 16th, but it may still be available and at $1200 and a 3 week old ad, he could be ready to get his heart right on a cash offer

Ok since it seems im never quick enough to catch any deals on craigslist up here, I stopped in the John Deere dealer today. They have a 2009 Cub Cadet LTX1042 tractor with 50 hours, hydrostactic for $1200 or a guessing maybe 2000 John Deere LT155 with the 42" freedom muching only deck for $900. Any ideas which of the two of those would be a smarter buy? The guy said the CC was newer and a nice mower but, CC were not made as good as Deeres. Of course he is a dealer, and looking at reviews looks like if the lawn is long at all the Freedom muching deck dosent do a very good job. Any thoughts on those?
