Are there any good websites for diagnosing plant problems? Which are your favorites?
If the bark of a Magnolia splits vertically and died about 40 days go, was it to wet? Well it did not die totally there are new sprouts at the base. What other problems can cause large vertical cracks?

sounds like frost cracks but i would have to see, could be stress, could be rotting in the stem, and a number of other things, what is at the base of the stem is either water sprouts or root suckers, they will take over and be the new magnolia, same type of magnolia you already have, they just have to grow. be beware that they will be weaker than the original.

Found a site that is interesting: TreeHelp.com
Must be better ones?
Diagnosed most of my problems with Ortho's Problem Solver book.
Other than the above magnolia problem, I had leaf scorch on a number of different plants. Not sure yet what was up with the Magnolia?
