View Full Version : Lawn is not looking so hot

I'm new to this site, great wealth of information and any suggestions and/or replies are greatly appreciated! I live in the western suburbs of Chicago and the lawn is looking patchy this year. Never had this problem before. What can I do to get it up to par again? It's my understanding that I should aerate and overseed in the fall, correct? Any suggestions on seed type. Should I fertilize afterwards? What steps should I take? I'll do whatever it takes to get it looking as it should. Thanks.

If you can, post a pic. But to answer your questions, Fall is the optimum time to establish grass. Aerating and overseeding is a good place to start. Use a premium blend of seed. Usually Kentucky Bluegrass and perennial Ryegrass for cool season grass. And add stater fertilizer. Don't use a weed & feed but straight starter fertilizer. Hope this helps and welcome to the site.

looking patchy? Define that. Fungus disease has been common this year. Red thread for instance:
also brown patch, maybe dollarspot
