is there anything that can be done about mushrooms? from what i've always understood mushrooms grow from organic matter (such as old tree roots) and can only be gotten rid of by finding and removing the organic matter.... so what else can be done?

unfortunately the most effective means to control is by raking them to break up their formation, but as for any fungicide control, none that I've heard of.

The best thing to be done about mushrooms is to combine them with basil, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil, and then pour over some fresh pasta, with a nice salad, warm bread, and your favorite beverage.
As for undesired mushrooms in the landscape, dig them out, and then toss them out. The portions you see above ground are not the significant part of the fungus; That is beneath the surface, and needs to be removed to prevent regrowth.

An elderly customer of mine insisted that I get rid of her mushrooms. Kicking them with neoprene boots works well.
