I am trying to help my dad put the drive belt back on his MTD riding mower. It is the top most belt on the smaller pulley. He has no manual for it.
We cant figure out how to keep the shaft from turning while taking the pulley bolt out...
This MTD is like a Murray. Front engine, like 14 hp. B&S engine.

Why are you trying to take the pulley off? Loosen or bend the belt guide and install the belt?

The belt guides are three small 1/4 steel tabs. hey CANNOT be bent or loosened.
Next idea...

the best way is to use an impact wrench to remove pulley bolts.

Remove the sparkplug and stuff some nylon rope ( like for starter rope) in the cylinder. When the piston comes to TDC it will stopthe pulley from turning. Leave enough rope sticking out so you can remove it easily.

If you use Remo's rope trick do the following.
.make sure your on the compression stroke rather than the exhaust stroke or you'll bend the exhaust valve.
