View Full Version : Zoysia vs. Common Bermuda

Last year I over-seeded a lawn with Common Bermuda and it's finally starting to show. Now I've been asked to consider plugging with Zoysia. Will there be any advantage in lower maintenance as far as weed control and disease resistance?
ps... Before the Bermuda the lawn was a mess of grass and weed varieties.

The trade off is that zoysia is much harder to cut properly. You will need a heavy duty reel mower for zoysia and heaven help you if it is allowed to get over an inch thick. Bermuda is not as woody. It is fairly easy to cut, but a reel mower is preferred for that as well.

Zoysia is slow to establish and suffers from thatch issues. I don't think it looks as good as Bermuda, even the common varieties.
