Trees that are close together - Want to remove one..

This is in my back yard to be... There are a group of trees that were planted kind of close together.. about 15 years ago maybe. I would like to remove one (a crab apple) but when doing so the other tree (not sure... plum - something) will have a sizeable bare spot.

Will this bare spot fill in? Should I trim the bare spot to promote new growth?

It will fill in. I just did the same in my yard. I cleared out a wooded section and saved a large Katsura Tree. One side on a 45' tree was completely flat. Its been about 3 years, and the flat side has developed 4-5' branches.:cool:
