Okay, so I do lawn pest control, not actual lawn cutting. I have a website that I designed and am happy with for the most part.
I am a bigtime anti-facebook person and am against having a page for myself. However, I don't want to miss out on any business.
So, is facebook worth it for my business or is a website good enough?

Well alot of college kids and teens (including myself) have a face book, so you are targeting a younger crowd most likely 35 or younger. Now facebook is becoming more popular and older people are starting to get it (including my parents). So give it a shot! Just remember who your targeting!

Nothing horrible about facebook in general, it's just not for me. My wife has one, so I typically find out what's going on from her. I just hate those people that feel like everyone cares that they had a burrito for lunch. It seems very "girl" centric to me.
Plus, I don't like the idea of people posting pictures for the world to see even if you technically have to be invited.
It's good in theory. I was a late adopter of cell phones too. It's just me.
BUT the real question is will it help me make sales? I basically offer a service that at first glance seems expensive, but is more luxury based. In other words, college students and early 20s aren't going to pay for it. I need the weathly lazy people that like being outside.

Then put a yard sign up! Or go to Florida and get a billboard! Lots of lazy old folks there!
Twitter is worse than FB!

I think that Facebook is useful for a couple of things:
1) It is generally easier to add content to a Facebook page than almost any website.
2) If I was a design/build contractor, it would be a no-brainer: I would take before/during/after photos of any job and then create a gallery for each project. I'd caption the photos and then put an announcement on my Wall anytime new photos went up.
3) As a pest control company, I would probably suggest something similar: post pictures of common pests, and use the captions to describe where they are commonly found, etc. I'd also use wall posts to make announcements about pest outbreaks where applicable. In my area, termites swarm at about the same time every year, for instance. Use facebook to tell people what to look for.
It's a great technology, if only because it's like a website that really easy to edit. We're working on our page right now.

You might do a facebook page just to get your business link in one more spot.
For generating landscape or lawn business, I think that Facebook is a big waste of time and a distraction.
As for visiting with family or friends, its okay. Virtually any real sharing on Facebook can be done just as well through email. In fact, with so much free long distance, I'd say that Facebook is a lazy and inferior way of interacting.
Skype with webcams would far exceed it by providing discussion with a real-time image.
But for Facebook and business benefits, don't feel like you are missing out.

the worst that can happen is someone will see that you do that for a living and they recommend you. I have gotten business from it.
