Does anyone have under deck photos of double blades that they can post?
I am still not sure of the benefits, and I am a little unsure of how they appear once mounted.
Thanks
Jim

John,
Thanks for the link!
I guess my questions would be.....
1. Are there spacers between the blades? How thick etc?
2. Are both blades still free spinning, because if they are they wont be in that position long.
3. Which type blade goes on top and bottom?
4. What would be minimum engine HP to turn doubles?
thanks
Jim
Jimbo,
I am running doubles on a Scag 48" WB w/ 14hp Kaw and a 52" Scag Tiger w/23hp Kaw. Both units work fine with doubles. Just stack the blades on top of one another - no spacers in between.
For the WB I moved one of the 1/4" spacers to the top of the deck.
On the Tiger I purchased 9 1/4" spacers and replaced the 1" spacer that came on the unit. Stack all three washers on top of the blade.
I run the gators on the top and OEM or high lift on the bottom.

What Shane said, but I found, on my Scag at least, that the blade bolt is not long enough to replace the nut with two blades unless you remove one of the spacers. No big deal as the spacer thickness is pretty much the equivalent of the blade thickness. I just keep the extra spacers in my toolbox for when I run singles.

Just stack the blades so they make a +. I dont use spacers in between but some people do. Just make sure the bottom blade is still at the same height since you are basically adding a extra quarter inch due to the second blade you are putting on so you are going to have to take off a quarter inch spacer to make up for it. Just tighten them down like you normally would. The only time the blades move out of the + pattern is when I hit a big stick or something in the yard . So just check them every once in a while.

I´ve discovered that fiber washers between the blades work great. Reduces slippage.

Shayne,
Thanks for the info.
Im running a Scag 36" WB 12.5HP Kawi, and a Scag Tiger Cub 52" 23HP. Do you have any part numbers for blades or spacers?
What type of blades are you running, and where does each type go? High lifts and gators with gators on bottom? Two high lifts?
If you have any other tips for the Tiger let me know.
Thanks
Jim

Jimbo, You don't need part numbers for blades or spacers...nothing changes. You may need to remove a spacer to accomodate the additional blade. As for configurations. Experience has shown me that gator on top and regular blade on bottom pulverises leaves to dust. During the dry season I only use a single blade set-up. I use doubles in Spring and fall or as need be.Play around with the configurationbs and you will find what works best for you. Two high lift blades may give you too much vacuum and cause alot of blowout.
Jim,
The spacers I used were the standard 1/4" thick with 5/8" hole that come as standard spacers on the walk behinds. Contrary to what "Spacer" noted - the tiger has a 1" spacer on top of the blade - so in order to maintain the same height on the blade the 1" spacer needs to be replaced with 3/4" of spacers. I used 3-1/4" spacers on each blade. (I am not sure if the Cub has the same 1" spacer.)
The OEM or high lift on bottom and Gator on top.
I have a "Vulcher" on order for each unit - should be here today. I will let you know how they work.
The Tiger has a home made striping kit. 3 pieces of 1/4" thick x 6" wide rubber (old conveyor belt) sandwiched between 2 pieces of metal. U-bolted to rear lift arms in front of rear tires. Had to use a spacer to clear the blade gear drive box. Very similar to picture posted by "Jet boater" a while back only he used chains.
