The mulch in my beds is getting pretty thin. I noticed at the garden center that they have a huge piles of mulches. I am going to ask them if they sell it off cheap before winter or do they store it. If I can get a deal, I will get a few yards......Question. Is putting it down in the fall a good idea or should I store it until spring. It will just have the regular snowfall on it, nothing piled from plowing the driveway or anything like that.

it's good to put down before winter to protect the roots of many plants.

I agree, you can lay mulch anytime your bed needs it.

The only problem I would see in doing this is the leaves. When they start to fall they are going to be all in your flower beds, and while getting them out, you're going to take some mulch with them. So this new mulch is going to be pretty thin again when winter comes around.

I think it would be better to wait until the leaves stop falling and then, after your last cleanup, put mulch down for the winter.
