I stopped by to chat with a guy clearing a lot today. He was using a walk behind with a salky. It had a kaw motor (pull start) and said it is called a "landscaper". I did a search but those words pull up a million threads. The guy wants to sell it for a $1000. It is an older unit but ran very strong. Does anyone know anything about these units?

Probably one of the old"Black Rock Manufacturing" mowers built for "Landscaper Supply". They were the Chinese-built mowers of their day. Built in the U.S., but built as cheaply as possible. As a matter of fact, the Chinese walkbehinds you see now, are basically a direct copy of that mower.
So, cheaply built, cheap to buy, built from fairly common parts that are easy to find in aftermarket parts catalogs. I think they sold for around $1200 new, depending on size. I would not pay over $500.00 for one of them.

I had a Black Rock mower many years ago. It was okay, nothing special about it. For $1000 I'd pass.
