I need to route an existing dryer vent through the steps somehow. Anyone ever done that ?

First things first.
Most building codes spec the maximum length AND the number of turns a dryer vent can have.
Please check with the local building code(s) prior to laying a finger on the dryer vent's ductwork.
In most cases - the ductwork is already max out as far as maximum allowable length and turns is concerned.
I try to avoid routing through steps.
We had one job where we did a patio in the back. The dryer vented in the back. To avoid routing it through the steps and exceeding building code lengths - I re-routed the ductwork to the front of the dwelling.
AGAIN :) 1st thing u need to do is refer to the local building codes :)

Keep dryer vents away from hardscaping work, it promotes a moist warm environment for moss, mildew, and weed growth. Not only that it increases your slip/fall issues in colder climates....
