Looking at buying a 1999 Kubota B2100 to use around my shop. Any info would be great. This will be my first tractor / loader and dont know what to look for.
Thanks

what are u going to do with it? what attachments do u want to run? the B2100 only has 21 hp, so it will only be good for minimal tasks, like mulching and light 3 point work. I will have minimal FEL lift capacity, probably under 1000#, so if u will be lifting anything heavy look for something bigger, preferrably in the 30-35 hp range, with a larger frame size. This size will handle a larger range of 3 point tasks faster too.

I plan on moving small amounts of gravel, loading sanders, scraping my lot. Just little stuff like that. Will this tractor work for little stuff like that.

you will want to have rear ballast if u are loading gravel and u may not have enough lift height depending how high ur sanders are. it HAS to b 4wd

on a small tractor like this all the weight is on the FEL when u have a load and without 4wd u can spin the rear wheels just driving around with a seemingly insignificant load. u should also consider all tasks u may eventually want to do because it would make sense to buy a bigger tractor if u think u may need it down the road. a B2100 will work for what u want to do, but trust me, once u have a tractor, u will find many more uses for it and no matter what size u get, u will be wishing for more power.

LBA,
Your comment caught my eye. I'm also thinking of getting a tractor even though I have no pressing need for one. It's just that there have been many times in the past when it would have come in handy. I was considering a used Kubota BX23, but I may have an opportunity to get a Kubota L3710 for about the same money or maybe a thousand more. They both have FEL and BH and the hours are about the same (about 300) even though the L3710 is a few years older (2000 versus 2006). I'm a homeowner and don't have a barn, but I could erect a shed for it once I got the machine. The L3170 looks awfully big to me, but I take it you would go for it if you were me. Is that right? Regardless of which I choose, I'd have to also get another trailer, because the one I have is only 15' and single axle.

Buy the 3710. In two years from now I guarantee u will want bigger and will never imagined how u would have functioned with the smaller one. I have run compact tractors since 1992 in the following progression:
Kubota b7200 14hp w 60 belly mower
John Deere 955 31hp w 72 belly mower and FEL
John deere 4600 43hp w 84 rear mower and FEL
John deere 4400 35 hp w 72 belly mower and FEL
John deere 4410 35 hp w 72 belly mower and FEL
John deere 3203 32 hp w 72 rear mower and FEL
My current tractor, the 3203, was Deere's econo version at the time and trying to go cheap I bought it. Not a good choice. None of features of nicer model, awful hydraulics (not smooth) low power and only 750 pounds of FEL lift. I want a 50 hp TLB and if i got it I would still want bigger. buy the most powerful u can afford and look at other brands like John deere and new holland to broaden your options. I wish now I could take back the decision to buy the 3203 and get something bigger. Look at Deere if you want hydro(trust me, the twin touch is much easier than the rocker pedal) and kubota if u want gears(the glideshift is a reliable, proven transmission)
Another note. It may just be me but I tend to not like tractors with 3 point hitch backhoes unless they are integrated TLB units like Kubota L39 that are made for it because I think it is very hard on the tractor again maybe just me but something to think about u don't want to buy a tractor that has been worked too hard and have problems down the road or tear up a tractor by overworking it. Also if u can try to find a tractor with a preheater that u plug in to warm the engine. I had this on all my tractors and i believe it makes them last longer. Diesels hate cold starts and while companies may advertise it will start right up in cold, it is really hard on engine to have thick hardened oil to run on. As for the trailer and the shed that can be figured out, but u do eventually need a place to keep it inside or paint will fade and it will look 10 years older real quick. Also it is nice to be able to work on it inside

Thanks for the advice, LBA. I'd be getting the L3710 from a Kubota dealer about 50 miles from me that is taking it in as a trade-in. He doesn't have it yet. I haven't gotten a firm price from him yet, but the over-the-phone number was around $12,000 to $13,000 and the hours are less than 250. Sound reasonable to you?

I have a B1700 (15-17hp version) and its a great little tractor. I have moved gravel, mulch, scraped my driveway, dug stuff. You know, Ive done tractor stuff with it. Yes, its a lite weight and its under powered but its been very reliable with only a replaced hose in 12 yrs. It has mowed stuff (60" mid mount deck) others would use a brush hog on. Slow, but gets it done!
I have put ballast on the 3pt hitch which has made a big difference to FEL work.
If your just going to mess around the home and not in to much of a hurry then I'd say they are a great little machine!

Price sounds reasonable. I would look hard at buying any attachments that u will use right now. He probably has new ones or better yet lightly used on the lot he can package with the tractor cheap. Find out if the tranny is hydro or gears. I prefer hydro for FEL work, but just my preference. Hope it works out for u. If not keep looking. There is a lot of guys trying to unload their tractors right now and u gan get a great deal. post pics if u buy it.
