Aeration and overseeding are a great combo add-on service. Your clients will love the improvement in their lawns. Do this in the fall for best results. In our area, core aerators are the best style for our soil. Check with an equipment rental company or dealer for the best style for your soil conditions.
----------
Lanelle
2 GRAND A DAY!?!?!? Can you explain how you turn this lead into gold mr columbiaplower? (Meant serious even though it sounds sarcastic-haha) I admit that i am just getting a hint of this thing called overseeding. Can you eplain it more. I thought it was the "go buy 1 bag of seed and toss it around to fill in the bare spots" kinda operation. Although i would love to charge 2G for that, i think that the customer might cancel her 25$ wk account with me. If not, then im SET!
Just got a thatcher, and love it. Only used it once so far. Got it kinda late in the season. Thinking about an aereator as well, and jsut read about overseeding in a new turf mag i got. Am very interested if ya got the extra time to spare, or know where i can find the right info. Thanks
Lomers1@excite.com

My top day was $2700.00 last fall in 7 hours doing lawn aeravations. Had several lawns to be aeravated and seeded at $450-$575.00 each, so $2000. is easy to believe and understand. These are not $25.00 a mow lawns we are dealing with.

Aerating is good money. We charge 4 times the amount that we charge to mow. It's like getting a months mowing wages in about the same time it takes to mow once, but I use a 42" 3 point hitch aerator. We don't overseed here, because the lawns are so thick there isn't room for more seed to grow. We aerate spring and fall and it's easy money.
----------
Eric@ELM
Thanks for the posts..one other thing do you recieve many complaints about the cores left on the turf ??????? THANKS!

ok here is the deal. i have a lessco tow core areator. i have 2 large spreaders. myself and 2 guy go to a street where we have 6 or 7 (1/4 acer)overseeds lind up. i start areating and they load the spreaders i am done they are ready to spread seed. one pushes a spreader and the other hits any big bare spots by hand. then the spot man starts putting down starter fert. this prosess takes 15-20min and u charge $300.00. its great money and very easy money. and what i described isnt even a good day.

Scrub Question:
Why aeriate? I know it greener and helps with micro organisms or something or other. But that aint gonna convince a customer i dont think. I AM going to get a book this weekend on it. Now that i am leaving my "scrubdom" behind, i am hearing about alot of new ventures into lawn care that i never knew about. Man oh man do i love my job or what!

Machine: I drop off marking flags so the owners can mark the sprinkler heads and dog fences. They can carry a dog collar around and find the fence line and mark it. Turn on each zone on test mode and mark the sprinkler heads. If they ask me to mark them, I charge extra and don't guarantee that I will find them all.
----------
Eric@ELM
Thanks Eric, I knew there had to be a simple solution. It must be the burbon that clouded my head. Later

Try reading "Turning Hard Soil Into Cold Cash" by Pedrotti. I believe that is how he spells his name. Any way a good book to get you started in this area of lawn maintenence.

Can't areate s**t here unless they have a sprinkler system. This clay soil we have around here is hard as a brick from the drought

Charles, when the ground is rock hard and others are sitting around unable to aerate I still work. Check out 1st Products aeravator, better job than aerator but cost more and you need at least a 3 cylynder tractor. http://www.1stproducts.com
Ray

Has anyone used an aerator attachment as a sulky and stood on it to add the needed wait?
Thinking of using my walkbehinds with an areator attacked to the rear and standing on the platform.

Machine,
how are you going to turn around or back up ?
Have you ever tried to move a core aerator manually once it has a bite in the ground ? Eat plenty of Wheaties my friend. Last year I did purchase a pull behind tine dethatcher at a garage sale for $40. I took off the pull brackets and have planned to make brackets for the front of the WB (similar to the JRCO model, but smaller). Hopefully by the fall. I have to justify the welder I bought last year somehow.

Lot of good ideas and the chance to make some good money this fall. How about sharing some marketing ideas.
Great idea about the flags ERIC. We placed them last year. By having the customer do this you "share" the blame for damage to sprinkler and dog wire.
When is it best to start marketing this service?
Thanks All
