i have a huster z with the xr7 B deck. cuts good but the clipping discharge is horrible at times. its killing me with double cutting. ive seen on hustlers wet site there ztrs all have different blade tip speeds. can i raise mine with pulleys off other models and would that help? the clippings are very long and gator blades cuz the mower to miss grass ive also run doubles but that didnt help much.. i was just wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions to my problem. ive tried the hustler part of the form but it takes so long for the moderator to get back to me because the form is heavily moderated lol

The problem with Hustler decks is that there is not enough room between the end of the blade and the front of the deck to move the clippings. I had a 2002 S/Z 60" that had a recircalating baffel in it, it sucked big time. I cut the baffel out and welded in a new strip of steel as close to the front of the deck as I could. Made a huge differance. This deck cut problem was discuessed last month in the post for Hustlers new mower comming out in January. You can also try using blades from Stens. They have a higher lift, 1.0", than the standard Hustler blade.

thanks so much for your response:) do U have any pictures of the deck after you fixed it? is the baffle you removed the triangle shaped thing in between the 2 blades on the left side of the deck ( when sitting on the mower)?

No pictures....Hustler has made a ton of deck changes that no one can keep up with as to what works in what area.

Go to NEW Hustler Super Z Coming Jan 2011. Look on page #18, post #175. This picture shows what I did back in 2003 that made my deck work in my area.

i was thinking thats what you did but wasnt sure. i do a lot of metal work and wouldnt be afraid to do that to mine if it would help with my situation. altho im so dissatisfied with the cut on this mower i may just traide it in on either a scag or exmark. i dont figure U still own your hustler what mower did U replace it with?

I sold my business back in Jan and the Hustler went with the deal. The Hustler is still running but I don't know what problems they have had with it. I didn't replace the Hustler because I also had a Walker that I kept for my use.

Its just to bad hustler really went wrong with the xr7 because the rest of the mower design in my mined is second to none.. I demoed a good bit of mowers before I bought this one so I blame myself lol im sorry to hear you sold out. Im in the process of getting a local college campus and am gona have to sell or traide the hustler in on a mower that will get the job done for the most part the first time lol

Another problem with Hustler is that they designed the deck to take a certian size blade that is not a common over the counter blade that is made by several manufactures. There is a big differance in blades. I found that Stens had higher lifts on thier blades. Most standard OEM blades are .800" and considered high lift. I was lucky, my deck took 21" blades and I ran a blade with 1.0" lift from Stens durning normal cutting. There is a ultra high lift, 1.5" blade, that is listed for Scag that offers great suction but my engin was not powerful enough to turn 3 at a time. I would run 1 on the left side with 2 of the standard .800" lifts in spring condition to keep the left side of the deck from clogging up. I spent several hundred dollars experamenting with blades. If I was to buy another mower I would first check to see if the blades are a standard varity made by several manufactures. It can be very costly to buy "special" OEM blades from a dealer. I also found that quality control has gone down hill with the blades. Espically after markert blades. Befor you use them take a look down the blade to see how straight they are. You will be amaised at how much they differ.

I was think high lift blades may help out. But the more I see things if my business expands more this coming year im gona need a mower that wont make me double cut every yard. This mower just frustrates me because it cuts the grass off so clean and leaves a beautiful cut behind the mower. But the discharge is horrible I guess for the deal I got on it I can't complain and the mower is still worth a good bit of money so I wont lose out. Im just more disappointed because this mower has everythink I need to be productive other than the grass blowing out and ruining the finish of the yard.. sure after the double cut the grass looks great. But the grass im cutting isn't over grown or super weedy. Its just normal grass being mowed on a weekly basis.
