Hey guys. Just got home from picking up my Exmark Turf Tracer Hp 36" 15 HP. I went out and tried mowing my lawn with the mulch kit on it. Well, I was really dissapointed at how it cut at first. Then, I realized it wasn't getting air under the deck, because it was blowing grass out the left side BAD! My dad was pissed because he thinks that if I spend $4500 on a mower, it should mulch better than that, and we're comparing the Exmarks ablity to my 21" Toro. Well, my lawn is really thick (as in lots of blades of grass per sq. inch, THICK!) and I guess that it couldn't get enough air, which is what happens with the 21" when it can't get air. Then, I mowed the other part of my lawn .5 inch higher and no clumps and it's probably just as thick or worse. Someone please reassure me that this air thing is the problem or I'm gonna throw a tantrum! LOL. Otherwise the mower is great! Really fun to operate. Input please guys. I really appreciate it. This is the first W/B that I've ever had. Really hate to get mad at it. Thanks again!

Thanks for the reassurance! I just spent a TON of money on this mower for what I make a year and don't want it to dissapoint me. I'm sure I'll get it figured out.

Have you tried it without the mulch kit yet?

I did not get the mulch kit with mine...but I can assure you that it should cut great without the kit installed. Shreds and disperses the clippings nicely....looks 'mulched'...without the hassles. :)

I only use a mulch kit on my Lazer Z...and that's when it is time to do leaves. Otherwise I just let it fly.

I don't like the line of grass that mulching plates can leave when banging out 18,500 fps.

Open 'er up (remove the mulch kit) and see what you think about it then.

I wish I could let er fly BUT! with all the flower beds it's a big no no. (I know just shoot it away from the bed) Can't do it. If I shoot away from one I'm shooting it in another. I mulch everything. As to your concern Scag.........You are right on. It does need to breath. Give it a little room to breath and you will love the result. Enjoy the machine.

Are you going to change your name now!:)

Hey scag/(EXMARK)48

To get it some air, you could raise the deck(mine has some bolts on the back of the deck to raise/lower) and then place some of the spacers on the blades to lower the blades back down to the height you are cutting now, if you like the height?

Souther Lawns- Yeah, I figured out the solution today. The 4th position on the height set was too high and the 3rd was too low. So, I put a 1/4 thick washer to even it out a bit. Set it on the 3rd pin setting with the washer on there split the difference and my lawns look great. I LOVE the machine. I saved about 2 hours today alone and still have tomorrow to go. I'm getting good at running it and am getting really productive running the thing. Two thumbs up for Exmark!

P.S. I really should change my name!

Good mower you got there Exmark36/Scag48.

Now what you going to get for wheels?

On the mulch kit you might have to make 2 passes with it to clean it up due to there is no where for the grass to go.

Somebody do him a favor and change that name. We can't have happy eXmark people with a Scag name.;)

Yeah, I really should do something about it... I ended up getting the Jungle wheels from the dealer at cost, which is $247, not bad. I can't blame him for not selling it to me for less, he'd be losing $$$. I can't change my screen name, it won't let me register again. Says I'm registered in the board as Scag48 and it won't let me change. Chuck, can you help me fix my name? LOL.

can someone explain the "needs air thing" to a guy that never mulches because he doesn't need to and doesn't own a mower that will mulch without a bunch of blowout.

yes...the beloved lesco 48 is a mulcher NADA! and I say that because of blowout, not the final appearance. when I have mulched it looked good but I ate dust and had crud collect on the motors crank vent. not worth it to me.

and SKAGMARK 36, did you even really consider a 48?

I did consider a 48". I'm glad I didn't buy one though, would have been too big for my lawns. I mowed them all today with the 36" and that's the biggest deck that I can get on most of them without having problems. I did apply Mo-Deck because the dealer I bought my Exmark from had a can of it and I told him I'd try it out. I was impressed with it. Buy Mo-Deck! And Exmark!

I warned you about the mulch kit plus you really should go slower in wet grass. Congrats on finally buying a mower, Does that mean no more posts on it?? By the way you got list price on the tthp.

Scag,

ALRIGHT !!!
Personally I wasn't sure this day would ever come.....it's been 2 years you've been trying to convince the parents to let you get a bigger mower (probably longer, but that's how long you have been talking about it here). Well..... Congratulations !

Now I am the the jealous one......me and my belt drive that is !

Remember to keep a couple of bucks aside for parts like blades and blade belts should something happen since this is now the front line machine......you will cry bigtime if the mower is down and you have to go back to the push mower for a week. Keeping an extra set of blades and a belt at home or with you is always a good idea to keep yourself up and running.

Good luck. and let's see some stripes.....not just wheel tracks ! :D

Geogunn-Problems as in getting anything bigger on my lawns. I think a 48" would have been too big, so I'm glad I didn't buy one.

Jeffyr-I bought 2 oil filters and an extra air filter. I might get some blades beginning next year, I don't think I'll need them this late in the season but you never know. I don't have any extra belts since the mower is new, but I will get some next year. I'll get some stripe pictures. I was pretty impressed with how well it striped. The flap on the back really makes a difference.

dlandscaping. You warned me about getting mulch kit for a Toro, not an Exmark, if I remember correctly. There is a big difference there. With Toro you can't even get a mulch kit for a 36", you have to buy a completely different deck, which is kind of stupid to me. Exmark has it figured out by making one deck do all 3 things instead of just one. I think that Exmark is lightyears ahead of Toro. How do you know how fast I was going in the wet grass? You assume way too much. BTW, the price was $4500 after tax, $4100 before. With the mulch kit and Jungle Wheels it was $4800 all together. I'd say I got a deal considering that's the price of a brand new one.

 Famous last words:rolleyes:
I have bought brand new belts and had them break with less than 8 hours on them--2 in a row and there was a bubble in the rubber when the rubber was poured. Just for safety sake.....and learn how to change it before you have to !!! I took a Sharpe marker and traced my belt route on the deck so there would be no confusion. Do the new mowers come with a belt diagram like a car ? They should. And all it takes is hitting 1 unforeseen object to bend a blade.

Scag 48,
Learn to read or interpret information. I told you there was no mulch kit for the toro 36 floating and you can't buy a different deck for it either. But since your the expert on these commercial mowers i dont know. To inform you you can't. Second i told you about the mulch kit on a toro 36 FIXED deck which is a EXMARK METRO with a tbar. They of course make a mulch kit for that deck. I'm glad you know how to run a mower with a mulch kit after 2hrs or less on it while i have over 600 hours on my toro and 100's on other commercial machines. No more hearing about you getting a mower now either 2yrs you spent telling us that. Now all we have to listen to is BUSHHOGBOY and his junk.

dlandscaping-You need to chill out. So I made a mistake, big deal. I've used my new mower for more than 2 hours and who cares how many you've put on yours. It's irrelevant information. I'm happy with Exmark and that's all that matters. You can go use your Toro and have fun with that.

BTW, BushHogBoy's Scag will kick @$$ when it's done. :D

Hey, ScagMark 48/36, Congrats on the new mower. Ain't it great. Starting it up that first several times and smelling the paint getting hot on the muffler. ;) I've bought used commercial mowers before but just bought my first new mower 'bout a month ago.:D (62" toro z) finally getting really use to it and what works best with it. give it some time, it'll only get better. BTW, if your not going to talk about buying an Exmark anymore, I can't wait to hear about what your planning on buying in 2 more years! LOL And what are you going to do with all your extra time you are saving with your new mower?? Not girls I hope. LMAO Have fun. Marc

Hope Were Having Fun Now!!!:jester:

I have never seen a mower that mulches as fine as exmark ... In thick wet grass any mower will have problems. Keep the mulch kit on.
