Hey everyone,

Is a two wheel FEL bad? I know a 4wd drive would be better but will it work okay? maybe put some weight on the back. I saw an older john deere (not sure what model) but I asked him and waiting to hear back. It looks like a 655 or something like that. Im not positive its 2wd but it looked like it was. Like I said waiting to hear back. I would like a 4wd but it would cost more.

yes, a 4=wd does cost more but it is well worth it.

655 is a pretty small tractor to run 2wd with a loader, you'll definately want to max out the ballast, especially moving dirt, rock , etc.

Make some brackets for suitcase weights on the box blade. That way there will be weight and therefore traction on the year axle. It won't help much in mud but it will help with everything else

Most of us that have 4WD on our tractors think its the way to go. For loader work, when you have a lot of weight over the front tires, you can get a lot of traction, and it helps when your working on soft ground.

You have to be a little careful though, as you can break the front wheel drive when doing loader work. If your driving forward and have the bucket pushed down on the ground, it can and does lift the front tires off the ground, which puts them in a state where they are unloaded and spinning. If you then suddenly drop the front tires on the ground, it can tear up the gearing in the front. (Imagine that your bucket is trapped on a root and your pulling up on the joystick, and it suddenly comes free).

Some tractors are a little more susceptible to this then others.

I wouldn't say that it happens all the time, but I know of 2 tractors that have had this sort of damage to them.

Other then being a little careful when your doing that sort of work, having front wheel drive is terrific.

I wouldn't buy a tractor with only 2wd but it really depends on what you intend on using it for. The 55 series tractors were a good series. I've owned an 855 4WD for 10 plus years and other than a steering kuckle shearing off I've had no problems with it. I run mine with turf tires and loaded rear tires and keep some sort of implement on the back unless I'm just using it for mulch jobs.

You will struggle without the 4 wd. If you plan to do a fair amount of loader work, you will be cursing a lot!!!
