So my site is finished and has been launched. What key words did you use for searching? lawn care city state, lawn maintenance city state, etc.

What else can i do to increase the hits?

You mean like what type of consultant to hire?

Or like what kind of content to build?

Remember, as the number of related sites triples, the old "increased rank" game is going to come to a screeching halt.

Are you looking for more aspects about the website fantasy, or how to deal with the reasonable purpose of a website in the next 10 years?

what i'm trying to figure out is how to get better search hits on my site. right now if you search "lawn care wilson nc" wilson being my town... I don't come up.

I just registered with google to tell it to pick up the site. Does it just take some time? The site has only been public for about a week.

Time and effort is a big part.

Almost any website can get more hits.

But whether it gains ranking can be unknown. Because sites above you can, and often do the same thing.

May just post a new topic along these lines today.

What's your web address?

post up a link to your lawn service (http://www.hungrygoatlawns.com) site.

It'll be easier to make suggestions if we already know what you're working with.

www.grassmasterswilson.com

I had this done by a buddy who does this for a living because i don't have a clue how to do this. He is suppose to add key search words. I also added the url to google and yahoo.

When I google the address the only versions that come up are the ones with "live" tag on the end. Which I guess is the program he created the site in and the tag we used for viewing updates.

if you have access to your page and can edit the html code by yourself, add this line in to the <head> section.

<meta name="keywords" content="Put keywords here that relate to your site and services you offer, lawn service, lawn mowing, grass cutting, landscaping, and so on, separate keyword groups with a comma" />

if you cannot edit the code yourself, put in your keywords and email him the line and tell him to put them in.

honestly, if he does this for a living I wonder why they are not already there...

I did my lawn service (http://www.hungrygoatlawns.com) website myself and it is not that hard once you smash through it once or twice, feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I removed the keyword tag form 2/3 of my pages, and they all remained as good or better for ranking.

Probably because all those keywords are already in my title, description and page text.

If the keywords are in those 3 areas, then the Goog rarely needs repetition.

But that tag won't harm in any way that I know of.

What was your motive for removing them?

The tag is fairly irrelevant anymore.

Makes sense too.

If the words are already in the text, the alt tags, the title and description, its understandable why Google would cull the importance of a keyword tag.

A long time ago keywords were critical. Now they are hardly used at all. Still with what little effort it takes to add them I don't think I would ever leave them off a site.

Easiest way to guarantee more hits and only pay for what you get is to use google adwords and "pay per click". "Keywords" and "links" and manipulating "spiders" and all the other stuff is nearly impossible to manage and be successful. Unless you want to spend all day doing that instead of running your business.

You set how much you want to spend per month and what place you want to show up on the search engine. Every time someone clicks on your link you get charged a price depending on the rate set by other competitors in your area/keyword.

Upon the theory that the keyword tag might be counted once again?

Nothing is impossible.

Even if the Keyword meta is now ignored (had not heard that, need to refresh my research) developing effective keywords is important in building those words and derivations of those words into the body of your lawn service ('http://www.hungrygoatlawns.com") site.

The more ways you can say the same thing in a different way without being repetitive or boring, and still make sense, the better.

Make a list, print it out, and develop body content that incorporates those terms.

thanks guys. I signed up for google adwords and the ad is showing up on the page. I'm also searching for my site using different phrases in the search box. Heard the more clicks the faster google might recognize the site.

Any idea what time frame it takes for google to "find" your site once you add the url? I guess the amount of traffic makes a difference too.

I have to agree with you Goat. Working those keywords into the body can be a big help with the search engines and you may find some that you never thought of in creating them.

I don't think Google and the other major sites use the keywords any more but some of the more obscure search engines and directories likely do and it only takes a few minutes to create them. It sure can't hurt. Usually when I do a site I create the home page, add the meta tags and then copy that page to the other pages I am doing, then modify them so the meta tags are automatically copied and take no effort other than the fact I edit the page title and description. You have nothing to lose by having keywords.

It shouldn't take Google long to find you. The last couple of sites I did were at the top of the search engine in less than 48 hours without even listing them with Google. I did add a few links on my other sites and the Google spiders found the sites on their own.

Go to as many free directories you can online and sign up. The more links you have to your website the better. Also create a Facebook and Twitter account. Reviews help tremendously so ask clients to leave reviews online.
