We are in the process of finishing up our webpage and need a fresh set of eyes to look it over to see if it will catch the attention of prospective clients. Let me know what you think, good or bad I like to know.

I really try to be positive when I comment about a web site but if I don't say what I really think it doesn't help anyone so if I answer your question "Is it eye catching?" honestly I would have to say no.

It came off to me as dreary and hard to read. I do think if you brighten up the text some it would be a big improvement. There is too much grey and black and not enough contrast. I think a dark website when other elements on the pages are bright and cheery can look sharp but you need more contrast.

would you recommend white instead of gray?

I have read somewhere that you are never suppose to use black background with white text. Just not easy on the eyes. The minute a person comes to your website, you should have an immediate "call to action". I am just repeating what I have heard.

Go your your local library and check out some books. Do a search for "web usability". I just got back and picked up two books. One is called Homepage Usability and the other one is Don't Make Me Think. Both are available and rated high on Amazon. I actually bought the Don't Make Me Think book off ebay and waiting for shipment.

I changed the background color to a green. Did that help a little?

Much, much better now. The white text is easy to read for me. I think it might be considered eye catching now. I think I would go a little brighter shade of green for your headings otherwise it looks good.

The logo cutout looks pretty bad, that needs some photoshop work.

Logo cutout needs to be fixed.
Try to get a high-resolution stripe photo instead of that dull/cell phone quality picture, really annoyed me.
The green font titles hurts my eyes...could just be me, I can suggest to match the colour code to your logo green which is slightly darker.

Otherwise its looking good!

Strongly agree the striped top log picture has got to go. Even if you have to purchase a photo like this one.

Also increase your template width to about 1130 and increase all font sizes to the next step. Nobody uses a screen anymore less the 1280 Pixels wide. If they are they are unlikely to purchase your services.

Hmmm, my Google Analytics still says 1024x768 is on top for screen resolution used by visitors and our customers purchase services and product from us all the time.

If your local stats show that then Yes by all means hold with what you are using. On some of the web sites I do for my clients I am not finding that. Google is a great tool!. Are you using Google Ads. Google can target to specific markets down to a zip code. You only pay for what gets clicked to your site.

My oldest sit that gets hits nationally is visted by these resolutions. For this site the target is high end model train collectors.

1. 1024x768 225 17.72%
2. 1280x800 180 14.17%
3. 1440x900 108 8.50%
4. 1280x1024 98 7.72%
5. 1680x1050 96 7.56%
6. 1366x768 73 5.75%
7. 1920x1080 62 4.88%
8. 1920x1200 54 4.25%
9. 320x480 44 3.46%
10. 768x1024 43 3.39%

Just off the top of my head at first glance, I'd enjoy a page background color that is a darker green, and the red letters seem hard to read.

Otherwise most of the appearance is nice.

@TurfCare,
You need to 'clean up' your site a little bit.
I know it's been said that its a little too dark already,
so my quick suggestion is def the banner image, which has
also already been said.
But you do need a nice banner image with your logo on it!
Also include your phone number in the banner.

Next, can you make your contact form shorter?
And remove the 'captcha' box, people hate those things.
and you don't have a high traffic site so don't worry about spam.

Hi Turf Care,

Here's some suggestions:

1. Fix up the logo in Photoshop to eliminate the spikey white halo. If you'd like, I'll do for free if you send me the original high res version (PM me).

2. You have a problem with the button/text colors for your left-hand navigation - just the submenus. Click on the About Us and Services sub-menu buttons - they're dark green with gray letters, hard to read. All you need to do is change the 'current page' link text color to white (for the submenus).

3. You have a lot of nice images throughout the site, but you don't have alt tags attached to them. These tags are incredibly important to boost Google rankings (use important keywords in the alt tags). I'm not familiar with the 1 & 1 interface but I'm guessing they let you type in a description for each image (that populates the alt tag).

4. Looking at your page descriptions, keywords, and text, I don't see that you've targeted the important search terms. Think about what people search for in your industry; people's searches would look something like this: 'lawn care Indiana' ; 'lawn care indianapolis' ; 'landscape design indiana' ; 'stone walkway installation indiana', and so on. These are the terms that should appear in your keywords, descriptions, text and alt tags. In addition, select a different set of target search terms for each page - google loves that.

Love the website Progressive. I'm in the process of redoing mine after a couple of years in service. I like the simpler design with white background. I'm going the same route. Nice job.
