he wants to switch to this design. http://www.templateaccess.com/demos/6056/about-us.html
by putting a quick quote text up in where the text at the top right.
he says it will be easier for him to edit too.

looks clean to me, but a "web guy" should not need to work off of template. Of course it will be easier to edit, it's already done! all he'd have to change is the words and pics. and you should be demanding that he make it easy for YOU to edit.
I hope you're not paying this guy much...

he said the html will be easier for him to edit. the wp calls for too much coding. it said it will be cheaper to go with the html
i want to draw more attention to the free quote aspect.
i suspect he'll charge me around $70 to make the changes.
i'm torn on which format to go with. obvious the 2nd format will change quite a bit with his edits

I would stay with the CMS system otherwise you will end up paying him to make edits.

ok so he gave me a price of basically $90 for the whole new layout.
i'm trying to decide if i want to fix what i have or go with the new layout which would be more geared tward the request a quote page.
i should mention that i wanted to maybe change it around a little.
and he's really good about not charging for extras after the fact.

or....
i could add some scroling text to below my banner saying click on contact us for a free quick quote. id want to clean up the request a quote too.
i could also add my phone # and email to the banner.
so the big question fix what i have or go new style.

doing a little talking to my self again
LOL!
My philosophy is to keep things simple.
think about the questions you get asked on the majority of new customer calls and craft your page to answer those common questions.

I still like your current one better. To me the new one sort of looks generic and templateish where the pevious one was sharp, unique and distinctive.

any more opinions
If you want to edit your current site, I would look for a different web developer. For $90 I would be willing to bet that there is no coding on his part, just filling in the info. Also the coding on your current site is real basic and would not require that much work to edit and add stuff to it. Just my thoughts.

Mr. Q is right, your current site is much, much, much better. The template is very funky. I also agree that any web guy worth his salt should be able to edit your current site.
But expect to pay between $35/hour and $75/hour to make changes. If the changes involve PHP (wordpress) coding then double this range.

Sorry GD, I don't see any improvement from the old site. If you are going to spend money make sure you make improvements. Don't change for the sake of change.
The OP said WordPress is too hard to code?

good decision, @turboguy nailed it with "To me the new one sort of looks generic and templateish" I couldn't agree more. And while there is nothing wrong with templates, but that's one of the 'free' ones.. and the saying goes.. you get what you..
Also don't be afraid of wordpress, for anyone re-designing a site from scratch it's one of the best options out there! There's a long list of benefits - plus you can easily edit it all on your own - no web designer needed to make quick changes, announce specials, coupons, etc.
