Time to check in with everyone. How is business looking this season for you area of the state? It's shaping up very well here with only a slight problem - no spring time. We are just finishing getting rid of our snow banks and some lawns are already looking pretty green. There is NO WAY we are going to get through all of our spring clean ups before the mowing begins. I have almost all my customers on contracts this year for the first time and also had to raise the prices (afraid of fuel costs), but everyone seems happy. Let's keep the ball rolling! =D

with all the rain on clean ups. i do what i can do and will have to go in for a 2nd time to finish it up. a lot of them i am getting them now on the 1st time in. on de-thatching with my walkers and exmarks picks up most of it so they get it done on the clean up. all my account are on a flat rate on a clean up. in two weeks i have a guy starting to work on hardscaping he can do it by himself with helper. i will do one job by myself with helper then move on to the next job. the 4 man mowing crew will be mowing. if they finish all the mowing early then be hardscaping to help out us.

Hi Jason
I am new thinking about starting up a new lawn care biz..
Cut grass and snow blow only.

Okay, good deal. What part of Maine are you from? If you want to start it this year, you should get in a hurry and get everything lined up. Are you thinking of doing it just for some extra money or a career? First thing I would recommend is Read and READ posts on here. Also, I would recommend buying Ken LaVoie's lawn care success book. He runs a landscape business in Waterville and has writting a good book of info that is specific to our region and state - well worth the $47!! It's near the bottom left hand column of his website http://www.lavoieslandscape.com/

Good luck!

Okay boys, did my first mowing of this season yesterday and this week it's about to hit the fan - got LOTS of spring work left to do and mowing is kicking off in full schedule.....got mowers and everything ready to go - now if only my hired help was ready to start - guess I gotta tackle it by myself for 2 weeks. How's everyone's season shaping up so far?

we did good in 3 days 20 clean ups done. one road their are 20 houses. i have 15 houses for mowing clean ups and plowing. yesterday i end up with the last 5 houses on the road for mowing clean ups and plowing. the company that was doing them went under. one guy come out and ask me how much to do the clean up and mowing? told the price he said do it. then he went to his neighbors houses then they all come out.

That's exactly what I told him! He's really excited and I think planning on trying to drum up enough business to virtually get free service for the season from referral credits. Do you offer any type of referral discount or program to your current customers, Stan? I've had pretty good success with it - everyone seems happy.

stan the man
05-01-2011, 06:44 PM
yes i do. if a full time account get me a full time account then i give them.
refer 1 person=2 free mowing
2 people = 3 free mowing
3 people = 4 free mowing
5+ people 5 free mowings + $50.00 gift card to a local restaurant.
but they have to be mowing Plowing spring and fall clean ups to be full time account
if they are not full time account just mowing they get
refer 1 person=1 free mowing
2 people = 2 free mowing
3 people = 3 free mowing
5+ people 4 free mowings + 25.00 gift card to a local restaurant. if my full time accounts take the contact for the year and paid it with the 4 time payment plan they get 10% off the total bill. pm with your email address and i can send you copy of my contact. you can see how i have it set up. i do have 10 free mowing that i do for the year and 10 free fall and spring clean ups that is for the storage of my plane at a airport. one place i do a clean up at takes us 5 days do to. so that 10 days on clean ups and the mowing is 1 day to do.

McFarland_Lawn_Care
05-07-2011, 09:10 PM
hahha....Great question.....I have 2 or 3 with them.....I actually only trim the fence every other time if it's really bad. This year I am going to try to sell them on having me spray the immediate fenceline since I got my license. Also thought about getting the "Edge-It" attachment for one trimmer - looks like it would work well. ANOTHER technique that works pretty well, is use a back pack blower to blow all the tall grass towards ONE side of the fence and THEN trim it on that side - this make the grass stick out a little further and easier to reach with a trimmer.

Ya I thought about doing them every other time since i have 2 daycare buildings fully fenced and 4 baseball fields! AND on spring cleanups how do you all do them and stay profitable, yet affordable? If you were to rake each by hand you would have to charge for 3-4 hrs on a average lawn in this area...? Is there an attachment that would make this easier/faster? THANK YOU!

McFarland_Lawn_Care
05-08-2011, 07:15 AM
What part of the cleanups are you talking about? I am actually currently trying to figure out how to speed mine up a bit too, but over all they are just very time consuming! Pick up the sticks as best you can then blow the leaves out of gardens etc, then vacuum them all up in the middle of the lawn. I also use a tine de-thatcher attachment on the front of the riders sometimes if it would help. But I often spend 3 hrs on a cleanup. Just the name of the game - be sure to charge for it! =D

Pat

McFarland_Lawn_Care
05-08-2011, 08:03 AM
Ya, hourly rate would be a safe bet - or you could give them a rough estimate of what how long you THINK it would take and see what they think. Just explain to them that it is time consuming and they should expect to pay for it. Most of my cleanups are $150-$200 on average. But also it helps because I do fall cleanups too so it cuts down on the leaves - on first time jobs it can be a mess!! lol

stan the man
05-08-2011, 08:33 AM
you guys don't use the mower to pick up the leaves.i did a clean up Thursday the guy ask me how much. i said 600.00 and i did it in 3 hours all by and self. racking by hand takes time.McFarland_Lawn_Care did you look at that walker mower? what are guys running for mowers.

Hello all, I am just starting to get into the lawn care business, I was wondering a couple of things, 1 how do you figure out what to charge people? 2 Did you get a loan to start out with or just used what equipment you had and upgraded as you went? also is there a way to help stand out in a crowd, in my area there are lots of small out fits running around, some are pretty reliable and are around year in and year out others pop up for a season or 2 then fade away. I would love to be able to leave my full-time job and do this full-time, any advice at all would be greatly appreciated

Mouse - do lots of reading and research. This forum can be very useful in the "starting a lawncare business" section or whatever it's called. I would highly recommend going to www.lawnguru.net and purchasing Ken's program - it is well worth every penny and is specific to lawncare in Maine since the guy who wrote it lives in Winslow. Knowing what to charge depends on your market area and what equipment you are using and how good you are with it. Only YOU can determine what you niche in the market will be and as far as how to stand out I would say is pretty basic: be professional, continually educate yourself, be dependable and always wear a smile, and return calls to customers asap. Very few people in my area do any of these things lol. But you are right, they come and go. It usually takes 3-5 years to develop a decent sized client base but be patient and before you know it you will have to turn down work. Good luck and pm me any questions. Where you from anyways?

K Guys Enough Rain or what!?!?!? Well I know that some guys in my area mow in the rain but I have tried on my own lawn to see and left tons of clumps with my walk behind and it plugs my chute on my z turn... Grass i mowed down to 2.5" on the 8th is now almost 5 to 6" ! They only want it mowed once a week but with almost a week of rain in forecast WTF! Whats everyone's experience with this?

McFarland_Lawn_Care
05-17-2011, 08:06 AM
Pat, I usually never mow in the rain, but this week is an exception. There is now way I will get caught up if I let them all go this week. I am picking the "most dry days" this week and mowing them high - like at 4 inches, just so I can keep them in check. I am getting new calls every single day and it's gonna be a great season. There's something wrong with your Z if the chute plugs up! I can understand it making a mess and clumps that you have to smooth out, but the discharge chute should NOT plug up! wait...you're not talking about a bagging chute are you?

McFarland_Lawn_Care
05-18-2011, 08:02 AM
Pat, I only have to bag like 3 or 4 of my lawns and I keep all the leaves from fall/spring cleanups, then mix in the grass from the summer and add soil from any landscaping jobs and make my own compost. But I can do that since it's a relatively small amount of debris - probably about 3 yds total on the pile now. It reduces a lot over time as you mix it. If you have a LOT to deal with then probably take it to dump or landfill. You MIGHT try putting an add in the paper and see if any farmers in your area could use it, kinda crazy but might be worth a shot - certainly better than landfill.

we dig it
05-18-2011, 08:43 AM
i agree i would rather compost them then put to a landfill. I have checked local dumps and they dont take them anyway. There is some places in auburn but ONLY if you are a auburn resident and you have to have a license with address. I have close to 9 yards leaves and pine needles from just 3 of my cleanups which is more then i can handle in my yard other wise i would compost. I have a small yard. Thank you

I have a couple of lawns that have lots of them and now matter how slow I go, or how sharp my blades are, or what over lap I use. They seem to still pop back up and make the lawn look bad. I then have to go over them again and try to get them all its a huge pain in the @$$. Any one have any ideas...

Mouse - the dandelion stems are too week and just stay bent over when you drive over them and the suction of the mower blades are just not powerful enough to make them stand back up and be cut most of the time. There is really no way around it unless you want to double cut it in the OTHER direction. At least the season for them is relatively short - the best answer is to have a licensed applicator treat the lawn for weeds.

Try to hit the dandelions with your string trimmer after if there are not too many sticking up. This way you can leave the poperty looking evenly cut without taking the time to double mow.

Just a quick question - I know it has been asked a thousand times on this site and I've read all about it, but I like to get some feedback from you local guys instead. How often do you sharpen your blades? I know it totally depends on the amount of mowing you do and what you might be hitting with the blades, but on average? I've always just sharpened them once a week but I was thinking about switching to every other day or something. They are quite dull by the end of the week and chewed up in places. We usually run them 10 hr days when the weather is nice. =D

Hello all...I have a question and please don't laugh it might sound stupid. Why is there a lot of pick up trucks with riders mowers, doing cheep mows. I must say i am new,I just picked up a Toro WB, Does any one sub contract mows in Maine....

stan the man
06-16-2011, 09:58 PM
in yarmouth there are a lot of them using john deere and they are the same pricing as i am. i sub one lawn out because the back lawn has a lot of roots. i plow the driveway in the winter and it is 75.00 plowing. that is why i mow it. the guy that does if for me runs 3 john deere riders mowers. around here they are not any cheaper. what part of maine are you in

we dig it
06-16-2011, 10:11 PM
And some times you have a brake down and a good rider is cheaper then fixing your ZTR esp when money is tight...but ya i know that type. All you have to do is tell the customer the reason they are cheap has little to do with the mower and mostly to do with the cheap quality of the workmanship... As long as you are top notch quality because if they pick you they will most likely be really picky!

McFarland_Lawn_Care
06-17-2011, 06:10 AM
Stan, yes I've sharpen my own blades with a blade grinder from Oregon - works good but takes awhile if the blades are really banged up.

Jsecape - Ya, there are all kinds of people that mow like 5 or 6 lawns with their lawn tractor for other people just for extra money, don't worry about them. They might be around the same price but it will take them twice as long to mow the same lawn that you do with a ztr. They are not your true competitor.

McFarland_Lawn_Care
06-17-2011, 06:14 AM
It's hard to justify having someone else sharpen them for $5-$7 per blade. That would be around $50 per week and I'd rather save that. =D

McFarland_Lawn_Care
08-31-2011, 08:07 PM
jonesy, we don't do a lot of hardscaping - there is not a huge demand for it around here and there are several other companies around here that are much more equipped and experienced in that area. I'm friends with the owners so I'm happy to refer work to them since they don't compete hard with me for my services.....you know? Pretty cool around here for the most part - just a couple low ballers.

jsecape - what coverage? just liability and how much limit? any marine rider for your equipment etc? and is that for the year or 6 months or what? I'm not exactly sure what I pay since it's all grouped together and I have several other endorsements for snowplowing and pesticides etc. But that sounds maybe a LITTLE high for just liability if limits are 1mil/2mil but not far off. The biggest thing is your agent - get a GOOD agent who will look out for your best interest and help you out!! Makes all the difference in the world - you need to make him comfortable covering you and he will make sure you are taken care of in case anything happens. My agent has gone to bat for me several times - good guy.

Hello
How about a small Lawn care in Auburn...

10-05-2011, 08:19 AM
Ya ya i know its too early... but it is almost time for snow! So how does everyone do and charge for clearing? I did well plowing last year but seems like i made no money in the snow blowing side and lots of people wanting it done this year but how to charge and give estimates? Esp. in this economy?

McFarland_Lawn_Care
10-05-2011, 07:36 PM
I did as well snowblowing as I did plowing. I only do large accounts or else it's not worth loading and unloading the snowblower - like a school contract etc. I will be getting a pto driven one for the front of a small tractor for most of the larger accounts this season and then use the walk behind for any small walkways after the storms are over. For most small walkways I just jump out and shovel real quick - I go to the gym often in the winter and actually can shovel walks very fast by the end of the season. I get a min of $70/hr with the walk behind. You have to market it and do a very good job - not sure what I will charge for the small tractor - have to see how long it takes compared to the walk behind.

Also, I'm not sure about other parts of the state, but the economy doesn't seem to be slowing down the maintenance side of business at ALL. (Knock on wood). If anything I think people are hiring us more because it's cheaper to pay us a set amount instead of buying a big mower and then a plowtruck in the winter etc and doing it themselves.

Thanks Dave! I have weather proof vinyl banner hung up on it for plowing right now and have been fairly happy with the feedback. I like your FB pics of hardscaping - I really don't have enough experience with hardscapes to be comfortable offering it as a service yet, but I also haven't had much demand for it either. I am looking at taking some courses on it and maybe studying tree care a bit more. Lot of people cutting trees around here but not many offering tree care or feeding...you know? We'll see....wish I could do rock walls good - there are so many falling apart around this area. =( Nice plow truck too, btw! =D only had a few storms over here so far - bad winter. McFarland i've looked into tree care as well, i currently only take care of tree that are downed from storm damage or trees in my own yard. it does seem like a nice business to add on.
I don't do a lot of hardscape around here there are a few huge companies doing most of it, i haven't taken on big jobs, as i like the mowing and trimmer more.

I just joined plowsite the other week, i was alittle upset that i had to make a new name for the site and not carry over all my lawnsite info. But my name on there is Slimquinella.

Having a problem getting money from 2 customers from last summer mowing! NEED help! I sent a letter by mail with no response so I then sent one by certified mail and stated they are past due and now late fees and that I will have to do more legal action if no response within 10 days and nothing back so where do i go. Thinking about lien and small claims court? also what is everyone's policy on late fees and the progression on it when consistently not paying? They both owe about $250 each. Thank you ALL in advance!!!

Well I would stop by in person and ask to talk with them( start with that)
If you go to lean you may get nothing from it. You sold them a service and it was not big money so it may cost you more than what they owe. Try to work it out person to person. 90+ days would be very close.. Did you have a contract with them? or a handshake?

we dig it
01-31-2012, 10:05 AM
Handshake... I know old school but my word is my word. I guess it is too much to ask for to expect people to be honest esp since one I have been servicing for 2 or 3 years then just one job that was "more then she thought" for her new busniess and no payment wtf

jonesy5149
01-31-2012, 10:07 AM
I would try talking to them.. But to lean or court would be a lose lose for you..

a personal visit may be worth the effort, be professional do not show you are upset be kind. do not talk about legal action or late fees, ask how we can work this out -- maybe suggest a payment plan before the new season starts up (even thou you may not want to retain them as a customer) kindness goes along way. do not talk about there personal situation as they may have lost hours at work or a family difficulty, and don't talk about politics, just be short and sweet and to the point, sometimes eating a little crow and being paid is worth it. go luck. DIG.

McFarland_Lawn_Care
02-01-2012, 02:33 PM
I was about to post, but DIG419 said it excellently! Kindness and understanding go a long ways. Maybe they have had terrible difficulty and family issues, we have no idea what could be going on. I would try calling first and leaving an understanding message on their machine and telling them that if you don't hear back they can expect you stopping by on "such and such" a day to follow up. This way they will be aware and not as apt to be offended by someone just showing up wanting money. Of course, you are in the right - but you want to approach the problem the wisest way. And maybe next year talk to your customers about signing agreements that say when the work will be done, when they will be billed, what the charges will be and how much they will be charged if they do not pay within a specific time range. Up front and open communication is huge. Good luck - I really do not think it would be worth taking to court.....IMHO. A small claims may be judged in your behalf but I highly doubt the fees would be charged to them. Also, in small towns there is always talk - if you deal with this correctly - they may actually leave with a good taste in their mouth for you. Let us know how you make out. Picture yourself in the same situation as they are, allow them to keep some dignity and you will be way ahead of the game.

I want to get a good solid system set up for running day to day operations to help me focus more on selling and the business side of things and less micro managing. Shooting for 20% growth and hope to buy little or no new equipment. Set a good base, save up some bank, build the weed/fert customer base more.

went and did the dealer rounds and looked for this years mower, looked at a walker MC 20hp, snapper pro s50x, an exmark pioneer s, and a scag freedom z.
All 48 inch. no idea what to get

McFarland_Lawn_Care
03-22-2012, 06:47 AM
Dave, I would base a lot of the decision on the dealer personality. You want a dealer who will work for you in case of any break downs or warranty repairs. Make sure they have a 48hr guaranteed turn around on commercial equipment and/or if they will provide you with a loaner if needed. You should get a good feeling just by talking with them. If their customer service isn't up to par, the rest doesn't matter. Personally, I run mostly Toro zmasters and we have had good luck with them - they are almost identical to exmarks. I demo'd a scag once and it was good, but just didn't have a dealer close enough. The walker mowers are typically slower than a regular zero turn but they give an superb cut and back all the clippings. I would only consider this mower if you have a lot of High end customers that are very picky - even then I probably wouldn't. We have a few beautiful million dollar houses and we just use zero turns with baggers on them. I have considered the snapper but again, no dealer around. Whatever mower you get, be SURE to test it out and know it's what you are looking for.

nortonlawncare
03-22-2012, 01:58 PM
the exmark and walker dealer is about 20 minutes away from me, and he snapper and scag dealer is about 40 minutes away. i love walker mowers, i had one for a bit, and they def are slower. and i am leaning towards the snapper, but damn that built in bagging system is so damn nice!

McFarland_Lawn_Care
03-22-2012, 04:13 PM
Yes, it depends on how much bagging you do. We "mulch" and spread it around as much as possible and only have to collect the grass on like 8-10 properties, so it's just not worth it for me. My dealer is 1 hr away from me - but most of the repairs and maintenance we do in-house and I keep stocked on extra pulleys and belts etc. If you find a guy to work for you who is also a decent mechanic, that's key. Paying an employee $15/hr sure beats the dealer's $55/hr. Make a parts run once in awhile and you're all set. Try them all out and let us know what you get and how you like it. I'm very interested in the new exmarks. My buddy runs Deere's which I've borrowed from him before if we got in a jam and they are nice but also WICKED priced and harder to work on.

Okay, still a little behind on cleanups but catching up fast and will be all done by the middle/end of next week. The going straight into mowing. Few overseeding jobs next week as well. How is everyone's year shaping up? Getting a lot of additional work, may have to add another mower and thinking about an EFI. Any of you guys have one....how do you like it?

dig419
04-14-2012, 08:53 PM
2012 is going to be another good year, 100% retention with one new high end account added so far. will be done clean ups in a week and a half with no rain then it's on to mulching, i like the money it brings in but my back takes #&%!@* you know what i mean. the weather certainly has been on our side, i'm a week ahead from last year, things are looking good. hope all you guys are doing well also.

McFarland_Lawn_Care
04-15-2012, 08:14 AM
Dig - Do you use bags or truck the mulch? Bags might be a little easier to handle and use but also more expensive in my area. I haven't got all my contracts back yet, but some people are just a little slower. Right now I'm calculating about 95% customer return. Some I just didn't offer another season (weeding out the difficult ones) and some just cannot afford the service or were not happy for some reason or another. But then picked up 5 more residentials and at 2 commercials. One of them being a 6 hr job with two mowers (3 athletic fields and 2 school grounds). I was hoping not to have to buy much this year but may have to after all, we'll see. Yes we Definitely need some rain though. Last week of April looks like some rain in this area, so I'll do the seeding jobs the end of this week and hope for some moisture. If not, guess we'll have to hook up the programmed sprinklers - never had to use them this time of year before.

Mc.Farland : In 22 years first time i have open up the irrigation system to run in April. The mulch is always trucked in but i do have 3 clients with trier type gardens that i need to bring in bags, they pay plenty for this extra work. I have no commercial accounts, i have been tempted but i remind myself that i'm getting older and from the word on the street commercial accounts are very cost driven, so i say no. My client base are people from away, it's their second third, fourth home with one who has five homes, you know wealth is not equally distributed, but i'm thankful for these people. I did make one big purchase this year a new 2012 Ford 350 super duty with the six speed transmission - i like it, it's my second Ford, always been a G.M. man but the prices have ruled the day with my trucks. I like your new shirts. Dig.

McFarland_Lawn_Care

Dig - good choice on staying clear from the commercial - I have just a couple now and say no to the rest. I used to bid them hard, but 80 percent of my complaints would come from them - too many chiefs that all want something different. Our businesses are probably very similar. Most of my customers are "summer people" as well who only stay here a few weeks or few months out of the whole year. I am slowly getting to the place where we take on only the very best customers and can 'weed' out the others. I also have a heart for the 'local' people (especially elderly) who also need help and try to keep our prices where they can afford it too.

I also have always been a GM guy but haven't been at all impressed since the government rescue. Leaning a little towards Ford all the time, we'll see. Congrats on the new truck, she sounds like a beauty! =D
