Here's one of the roof cleanings we did last week while the weather was warm. Can't wait for Spring!

What actually causes the black streaks on the roof?

Roof Cleaning Virginia

Technically it's a form of cyanobacteria although most folks in the industry, including the shingle manufacturers call it a blue/green algae (Gloeocapsa magma). Here's a better description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloeocapsa_magma

You couldn't walk that roof with a set of Cougar Paws?

Roof Cleaning Virginia

Sure, or even without cougar paws on that one. But the bucket truck is my work truck - it goes to all jobs with me. So I market it and use it.

looks good Ted, I like your truck, wish I had one

Hey Don, do you use cougar paws?

Gotcha. My neighbor has that problem on his house but his is the only one and was asking me what it was and what caused it but I had no clue. Thanks for the link.

You're quite welcome. Here are some pics from another winter job we just did yesterday, this time in Woodbridge VA. There's a before and immediately after pic, plus an aerial pic. With the sun being so low in the sky this time of year, we do a final inspection from a higher elevation so we can see it clearly. The glare is fairly bad otherwise.

Loving that arial shot Ted. Looks like you better knock on the neighbors door.

I had the customer try to reel some additional business in ;-) I offered him an 'incentive' if he could get a neighbor to hire us to do both jobs on the same day. He tried to no avail.

What's the old saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you have to find a horse first" LOL.

Here are a couple of close ups of a rental property we recently did in Fairfax Station. The owner was about to put it on the market and called us to improve the curb appeal. It looked much better when we were done.

I never heard of this being done before. Do you just use a pressure washer and what for chemical do you use? We have those stains a lot around here.

Roof Cleaning Virginia

The process I use is 100% chemical based. Science and chemistry on the roof top :-)

I'll be on jobs all day tomorrow, but feel free to call me on Friday if you'd like. I'll talk with you about it in detail.

Awesome roof cleaning in Northern Virginia Ted. Cleaning roofs with snow on the ground too cool. Great close-up picture of the before and after shingles.

Thanks Tom. It's good to see you over here - this is a great site!

Here's another recent job we completed in Northern Virginia, yet these (cedar shakes) are done a lot differently than asphalt shingles. This was a town home with an attached garage. Look at the roof of the garage in the background to see what this one looked like before. Huge transformation, but lots of work.

Another beautiful roof cleaning job in Virginia done by American Pro Tech. Sold my first job of the year today. Did a demo on a frost covered roof. Wasn't sure how it was going to come out. When the owner saw it he called me up and wanted the rest of the roof cleaned.

Some of those results are spectacular! The last pic and the shaker shingle roof, those two are the most amazing. I am wanting to add this service to my company. I have just started reading on propowerwash, but if there are any other resources you could send my way, I sure wouldnt mind. I think I'd like to learn as much as I can this year, treat my own stuff, and then MAYBE add the service next year.

Great pics, incredible work!

Again, great results. If I were to buy a machine, what should I be looking for as far as size and power to have results like these? Of course I can't run out and buy the best thing out there. I am a debt free company and want to keep it that way. I buy equipment as business allows.

As far as chemical goes, to get results that you are showing, how strong are the chems? I live in Western New York, where everyone is on the green band-wagon, are there green chemicals that get these results? I have only powerwashed equipment before and we always has to do it out in the gravel lot due to the stuff we were spraying. What effects, if any, does this have on lawn and garden?

Sorry for so many questions.

This is one of several jobs that we did yesterday. I was looking forward this one more than the others because of the heavy stains on a light colored roof. The home owner was interviewing real estate agents. She went in the home when the roof was dirty, yet came out and saw it was clean. She asked for a bunch of our business cards ;-)

Here's a different twist on the before and after format. This, along with others, is going in the static gallery of a new web site that we'll be launching soon. (Gallery here, so far anyways (http://theroofcleaningcompany.com/gallery/))

A flash version of the new gallery can be seen here. (http://theroofcleaningcompany.com/)

Keep in mind this site is still very much under construction. And there are TONS of pictures for us to sort through....

Ted was the bucket able to reach the top side of the roof on the back side at the end farthest from the truck? What do you do if it does not reach?

Roof Cleaning Virginia
02-16-2012, 09:05 PM
Hi Markus. The bucket wouldn't reach everything on this home. (There's a wing on the back as well). When that happens, we either walk it, treat it from the ground, or break out a specialty ladder that never even touches the house and treat it from there.

For the 3 roofs that we're doing tomorrow, the bucket truck will come in very handy though.

If you're considering getting one for your roof cleaning business, feel free to give me a call. There are a few things to definitely avoid, and a few features that are a must have.

Top notch work again Ted! I'm sure these folks were thrilled with the outcome. Were you able to shoot the whole house from the bucket, or did you use ladders on this one?

Roof Cleaning Virginia
03-16-2012, 07:58 AM
Thanks RLee! We were only to treat about half of the roof from the bucket truck. (It's a big house). For the balance we used our free standing ladders (they're telescopic) and stood on the roof of the addition in the back for another portion of it.

We also soft washed part of the house, prepped the portico for paint, and power washed the THREE slate patios AND cleaned their Trex deck. It was a big job for residential.

We're doing two big jobs again today - full roof treatments and complete gutter resto on both. Anyone in Northern VA looking for some work? I could use another helper/assistant! LOL

It's tough to get good before and after roof cleaning pics this time of year due to the sun still being fairly low in the sky. This project in Fredericksburg VA turned out great. The pics? Just ok. (The majority of the roof cleaning projects that we do don't get posted due to poor pictures.) The customer was very pleased.

rlee
03-18-2012, 10:33 PM
Even with poor pics, it's still very noticeable! I would have figured it was a grey roof judging from the first pic. I still have about two weeks before I hit the ground. My kit should be here on Wednesday and I just found another complete spray rig with tanks on CL. I am going to pick it up tomorrow. I have been looking at bucket vans for the last two weeks and I think I will have one by late June. Beats the heck out of working from ladders all the time.

Give a call sometime this week when you have time. I know time is about to become scarce, but I need to pick your brain again.

Is that a same day before and after?

Man I need to get a bucket truck...

Roof Cleaning Virginia
03-26-2012, 09:11 PM
No photoshoppin' here my friend. The only change I'll make to a pic is to resize them to fit the 900x400 pixel template that I sometimes use for other marketing venues.

The 'after' pic above was taken a few days later though. I took pics the day of the job, but the glare from the wet roof was horrible. I was in the general area doing another quote and realized that the sun was high - great photo op time so I drove by and took that one from the drivers seat :-)

rlee
03-27-2012, 07:37 AM
Yeah, Im going to take some after pics today. Taking while the roof is wet seems pointless.

And I know that it's not photoshop, that roof looks so good though that it could be.lol
