MY problem this yr. is that we are not allowed to water....
i have a handfull of lawns to renovate but how will they turn out with no irrigation....seed will germanate in aeravator spike holes but nowere else....

it's so dry here that there is no way a core mechine will pull a core...aeravation is the answer...if ican get my kubota and aeravater on the lawn it's getting done... but do you think the lawns will not recover

I dont put my aerator (or any equipment) on a severely stressed lawn that I want to save until after water situation is corrected.
All our fall reno's were postponed due to drought, not enough natural moisture in the fall to establish seed. Will try to do some in the spring depending on watering restrictions.
Havent worked with your turf type and climate but I've been able to recover some pretty nasty looking KBG lawns with aeration/overseeding/fertilizer plus top dressing in worst cases.
