How many of us use the local newspaper for your spring advertising? I have 2 local papers that have a very strong following in the communities that I service with the middle age and older crowd.

What I need to know is how well did it work for your business, what kind of customers did it generate, and was it worth the money and time spent doing it. I personally am only wanting to sell maintenance, I don't do any new installs, hardscapes or sprinkler systems. I am not after high end projects, as I offer middle of the road pricing but want to stay away from the bargain shoppers of craigslist or similar areas.

Any input is much appreciated, Thanks James

If its cheap, why not? I will NEVER advertise in the Charlotte Observer again. I ran a quarter page ad, and not one phone call. Maybe if its a little weekly reader type of free paper they have, but wouldnt spend more than 70 bucks for twelve weeks...the paper is DEAD!!!! Almost like this industry.

The Charlotte Observer is a JOKE...I left Charlotte for Shelby a few years ago and have not looked back. My wife and I have another business (racetrack) we manage and promote and we have excellent results advertising in the small town newspapers, but with the big city papers we have not fared well. I am going to advertise my lawncare in the little wormy local paper, We get the Charlotte paper here, but these people dont care nothing about Charlotte.

Have had a great response over the last 25+ years from the local paper. It has been the best way to pickup new customers each year!

i tried an ad last year for about a week towards the end of the year...didn't get any calls...maybe it was just because it was the end of the season...but anyways i tried it recently...i put it in there for a whole month..the end of february all the way until early april...the paper around here only comes out 3 days a week...tues,thurs, and saturday...it cost me about $100 so i'll see if i get any calls lol...if i get one customer from it then it would be worth it...i already got one call from a guy asking if i was hiring anyone lol

There is the Knox News Sentinal here but that is the major paper and cover all of Knoxville. I'm wanting to focus on the west side of town and we have the Farragut Press that has a much better following. I am also planning on running an ad in the special Spring home and garden section that will be a full color special run over the weekend print. I hoping that this will bring me some of my target customers. I've found that in business that you really have to spend the money to ever get the chance to make any.

The Eagle, and after June 1st you are pissing your money away for advertising in a newspaper...

I'm going to run the rest of March, April and May and call it done. The only ones you pick up mid season in my experience seem to be PITAs or cheap scapes. I'm hoping this will be enough to help get in 15 to 20 new accounts, or at least pay for itself.

is it good to keep advertising in the newspaper through april and may?

the newspaper is the only advertising i do. i run a 12 month ad. changing the wording from time to time for the different parts of the season.

i average 2 calls a week through the whole year.

i've talked to guys who were stopping there yellow pages ad because they weren't seeing results.

the last time i passed out flyers (2 years ago) i passed out 500 and only got 1 call. i said forget that. 500 flyers and only 1 call. not worth it to me.

yeah i tried flyers...put out about 500 and got 2 calls but they were one time only customers...not really what i'm looking for....my brother and his friend cut grass one summer a long time ago by putting ad in the paper and they had more work than they could do all summer long lol...wish it still worked that way...the only thing that really seems to work around here is word of mouth...everything else is hit and miss

there are at least 2 dozen lawn maintenance ads in my paper. but i still get at least 1 call a week every week from march until november.

this is the first year i'm doing a 12 month ad. gonna start advertising for snow removal since i bought a snow plow for my truck earlier this winter.

Just signed up today, I got a color ad in the paper over the next 4 weeks and a half page in a special Spring magazine publication that goes with the paper and a half page business write up in the magazine. This all came out to be less than doing one round of 5,000 postcards and the paper hits 16,325 homes a week with a good following. I think I will keep a smaller ad in the back of the paper after this runs out to help pack my routes tighter.

i extended my newspaper add through the end of april...i'm the only one in there...there is a bush hog add in there as well but not lawn care.....so total it's gonna be running for 2 months...for $200...if i don't get a single call i'm gonna be pissed lol

yardguy28

then you'd definitly be pissed if you paid my price.

my news paper is charging me $200 per month. thats the cheapest price. the more months you sign up in advance the cheaper it is.

you can do up to a 12 month contract and thats what i did at $200 a month. thats the min. you can do.

it'd be more if you only did it for 2 months.

I pay 200 a month for a WEEKLY paper. 1.5" x 2". I run it every week March through may then every other week thereafter until november. Thats the cheap one. We have another paper that i dont advertise in yet, but they want 80 for a 1/32 page per week.

Have you figured how to get your ad to the top? Here, it starts at the bottom and moves up as others expire. If you run your ad 2 months, at the beginning of the second month it will start at the bottom again. I assume it would be better to have them at the top, especially around the peak time you think the calls will come it. Also, this year I am expiermenting with a different style of headline. My headline is double the height and all bold "LAWN CARE FOR YOU" and the second like reads "More Value For Your $$". I have never tried running headlines in the paper other than, "affordable lawn mowing" or something along those lines. My keywords are "you, your, value and $$". We'll see how they work. I can change the text at anytime during the 31 days the ad runs.
