Doosan announced that it is replacing the name "Ingersoll-Rand" on all their portable power equipment and replacing it with "Doosan Infracore Portable Power " at ConExpo.

Any thoughts on if they would do this with Bobcat?????

Not surprised but why have such a long name? I don't think they will ever drop the 'Bobcat', they would lose their name recognition.

Maybe dropping the Bobcat name will help sales:laugh::laugh::laugh: But serioulsy, they would be dumb to do so. So much brand equity at this point to turn it into a name (Doosan) related to poor quality and cheap foreign machines.

Yea I doubt you would see that happen. Part of that 5 billion the Koreans paid for the company was in the name.

For some reason i think there may have been a time limit to the naming rights before doosan had to pony up more money. Anyone remember something like this?

I work for Doosan Portable Power as the Marketing Communications Specialist and saw this post and thought it might be helpful to get the scoop direct from the source :) Yes we are changing our machine brand from Ingersoll Rand to the new brand that will be available at ConExpo. I don't want to ruin the surprise, so make sure to check us out on facebook (Doosan Portable Power) or Twitter (DoosanPortable). To answer your question Digdeep, we had a certain number of years to be able to use the Ingersoll Rand name, and that time is about up, so you will begin to see the new brand on our product towards the end of this year. As for Bobcat, their name will remain Bobcat - no change. Hope this was helpful to all!

They say there is more demand for smaller frame machines in the european market. Also, they are freeing up some space at the Gwinner plant for the new M-Series line.

The S130 was already being made for the European, African and Middle Eastern markets in Dobris since 2006. They started with the 553 in 2005, and started the S100 sometime in 2007.

Thats one of the reasons they are going to have it built in the Czech. More demand overseas..

You are 100% correct that the smaller size machines are more popular in Europe, but this is old news.

Dobris is in the Czech Republic, and Bobcat has been building the S130 in the Czech Republic since back in 2006.

Bobcat also did this because the cost of labor and materials is cheaper in Eastern Europe. Bobcat saved over $1000 in cost building the machine there. This was also a big help in the Middle Eastern market because it is a very price sensitive region.

Straight from the internet in December of 2007 reference: entrepreneur.com/tradejournals-

The story behind the new Czech plant goes back to 2001, when Bobcat acquired Superstav, a manufacturer at Dobris of compact loader backhoes. Production of loader backhoes was discontinued in 2005 and, in that same year, Bobcat started serial production of the 553 skid-steer loader for the European market. This development represented the first stage of a phased transfer of 553 production from the Bobcat plant in North Dakota to Dobris. At the time the Dobris plant was manufacturing the Bobcat line of backhoes and a number of attachments, including excavator buckets.

The decision to transfer production of the 553 loader to Dobris was based upon the fact that the majority of sales, subsequently replaced at the beginning of 2007 by the S100, are in Europe.

Meeting local needs

The next significant development at Dobris was the start of production, in early 2006, of the new 1.3 tonne Bobcat 319 mini-excavator. This was the first excavator product of its type to be designed, developed, engineered and manufactured in Europe to meet specifically the needs of local customers. In 2006, production of the S130 skid-steer loader was transferred to Dobris, All of the products mentioned above are now being manufactured there

I know this information to be fact based.

The 553 was the first skid made in the czech, followed by the S130 and then the S100 in 2007. The plant was shut down for a little bit because of some quality issues when the Middle Eastern dealers started to complain. I got this from a buddy of mine that worked for Bobcat in the Middle East.

What this means is that both Dobris and Gwinner were manufacturing the S130 and now only Dobris is going to make it. The rest of the world, not only Europe is dominated by small frame skid steers.

Ok, your saying the S130 is already being made overseas and by mid 2011 will be the only factory making them.

Did bobcat make a X319 mini x?? The only one I remember was the X316 which is discontinued. Replaced by the X418..

I'm saying that Bobcat has been building the S130 in the Czech Republic since 2006. Your information just tells me they won"t be making the S130 in the US anymore.

Bobcat makes the 319 (1.3t) in the Czech Republic and I think it's only for Europe. The 418 is also made in the Czech Republic.
