View Full Version : How much to charge for laying Sod?

I was wondering how much the going rate is to install sod.
Here in Canada the price for sod is roughly 3.29 for roll 5x10. or 50sqft. minus any markup.
Hourly, by job, or by sqft?

Thanks for any advice!

do you get your sod from a grower????this price is very high...laying sod is a crappy job and should be priced according to aggravation level. its not rocket science...but it is very labour intensive. I am doing an entire property..and it will take 2 days to do. i expect to pocket no less than 1000 for about 4000 sq.ft.property is level and super access to backyard
for me there is no set amount..... its all about how much crap is there to do to A)get the place ready b) how much hauling there is C) how you intent to get each trip to where you want to lay it

I get sod here in Arizona for $0.32 a sqft. I charge $0.75 a sqft for sod and labor with a $90 delivery charge. I also charge extra for multch, gypsum and fertilizer. I have a 400sqft min. On average a 400sqft job would be $500.00 for labor and materials.

I charge top dollar. Monday, I'm suppose to lay 400 sq ft of St Aug in a little front yard, till ground, rake out, haul away debris, level, I'll have to wheel barrow the sod about 25 ft.

Labor $325.00

Pick up sod-$65.00

Should take under (3) hrs to complete.

Ya sod around here is about 2.5$ for a 18" X 10Feet roll.

I just charge by the job, how much time, labor, hauling trips etc.

Its odd how it varies from region to region. Here in the southeast you got to get 500 sq ft at a time ( 1 pallet). As far as charging all depends on acess and prep work needed. I have charged less for 15 pallets than I have for 5.

I usually get $150 per 504 sq. ft. pallet for labor. If grading is required the charge goes up for the proper preparation. If all I need to do is kill the lawn, and lightly till--its $150 labor.

Thats my rate as well $150 per pallet on top of the cost of the sod , unless there is heavy grading involved. Of course i have laid 40 pallet jobs where i only got 100 per pallet , but thats what it took to get the job.
