Has anyone come up with a gate assisted idea for a trailer that has 4ft side rails and a 5ft tall gate ?

Im sure the ones that are used on 2 foot side trailers would work just fine . your cables would be a bit longer check out these treads

we have tried the " Back Saver " product and had to send it back. The problems is that the manufactured ones only work with the shorter rails. The Back Saver product allowed the gate to go down but if you didnt have your foot on it , it would just slam shut. To much tention but no way to adjust.

I don't have the back saver or any version there of. All I have is two spings with a hook on each end. One hook is attached to the mesh on the gate, the other end is hooked through a hole drilled in the trailer. Cost $20. The gate comes up with my foot and once it is hand high, I just grab it and put it the rest of the way up. It doesn't take all the weight of the gate all the way up. It takes enough weight that I don.t have to use my back.

a buddy of mine did the same thing as mentioned above. he took two garage door springs and added a certain amount of chain on them so they were the proper tension. goes down nice and smooth, and lifts up to the point where its easy to push it the final 25% of the way up saving your back.

So you just had to use trial and error to get the tension right on the springs?

I have coil springs on my enclosed trailer.. works well.

I think they are mounted 3' up.. so it should work for you.
