This sucker was hiding in a bed of vincas. I got to pull it and pull my hand back right away....tiny thorns all up and down....so i put on a pair of gloves and it STILL went through...this thing hurts like a mofo....

I ended up digging it out and holding it by the roots....anyone know what this is?? Should be called devil-weed.....

Looks like Horsenettle (Solanum sp.). If it is....all parts of this plant are poisonous, except the mature fruit.

hmmmm....not sure...i looked through my UF Weed ID book and it has horsenettle but doesn't look exactly the same plus no fruit on this one that I pulled.....and it looks pretty mature....

Interested in knowing what satans flower is called! I ran into these last year. They were hiding in some hastas and I learned the hard way about pulling them also. I did find that if you wear gloves and dig your fingers down a little in the soil around it, you yank it up w/o having severe bleeding afterwards.

You may have to burn the house down to get rid of it.

Looks like Keith is the winner. I had a feeling it was on some kind of invasive plant list. Hopefully no more pop up.

That is the problem with common names of plants. Different regions may use different common names. That is why I also included the genus name of Solanum sp. in my original post. I did not list a specific epithet because I did not know it off the top of my head.

Nice thread good, positive result!

I should have looked it up first, what the ranchers around here call soda apple looks nothing like that. My bad.:hammerhead:

Bull nettle, I love that stuff!

You might check out the Celsius label if you get it in turf. I used to battle Horse Nettle tooth and nail. Nothing in my arsenal would take it out. Grazon would knock it out but wasn't labeled for residential turf. It was the picloram it contained I think. Celsius smokes horse nettle. No problem now. I love that stuff.
