Does anyone use any of the multi tool systems? I am refering to the one that you can change from a trimmer to an edger, or hedge trimmer, pruner etc. I visited a local fair yesterday and they had a display of Maruyama equipment. The dealer claimed that they hold up well. The price was a little high but much cheaper that buying each tool as a whole. Are they worth it. I am considering other brands as well.

I've been using the Maruyama multi cutter for years. I have the trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer and chain saw attachments. You'll be happy with it.

Yes I have been using the Stihl FS85RT split boom model all year. The unit is well made and is a snap to convert attachments. I thought there would be a problem with aligning the two shafts but it goes right together.
I would say 20 second to switch from line trimmer to edger. This thing saves me all kind of space.
You will not be disappointed!
Heres my list of tools for the multi-cut.
1. Extended hedge trimmers 18" cut straight-90-degrees articulation.
2. Power sythe.
3. Line trimmer (comes standard)
4. Edger.
5. Chain saw (pole saw)
Maybe I should list what I dont have instead:)

Thanks guys, I hadn't seen many around. I am looking at getting a new trimmer anyway so I will probably go the multi tool route.

If the long term reliability on that set up in the Redmax is as good as the BC2600s I had, you will not be disapointed. I loved those trimmers.

Captdevo, How do you change attachments? Do you have to have a tool to do that? Hard to tell with the pic.

But I have a Ryobi 775R with the trimmer, edger, hedge trimmer, blower and vac system.
I often use the trimmer, edge and the hedge trimmer when needed. I don't use the blower or vac system too much at all.
But the Ryobi, even though it's 100% homeowner grade, just WON'T die. Things gotta be 7-8 years old now, and still kicks up every time.
I know when it DOES die, I'll get a Redmax, Echo or Stihl replacement, and sell all the attachments on ebay... <G>

I have an Echo with the line trimmer, hedge trimmer and edger attachments. Works good, I like the hedge trimmer the best, it has great reach.

I think these systems are good for solo or small operations who couldn't otherwise justify the cost of the individual tools. Also probably good as a back-up once you can justify individual tools.
I have the Shindaiwa multi-tool and am happy with it. I have the trimmer, extended hedge trimmer and edger. The trimmer is used the most, but the extended hedge trimmer has gotten a real work out cutting things it shouldn't be and is still 100%. The hedge trimmer is articulated, so it can be used as a power sythe as well. I'm not very impressed with the edger, but it's o.k. It tends to get a crazy wobble sometimes. Maybe it's just me and my technique since it's the only stick edger I've ever used.
I originally bought the Stihl but traded it for the Shindaiwa because it started hard and took forever to warm up. I think they have since changed the carbs (my dealer says they change them like underwear).
I also have the Ryobi (like Doogiegh) from before I went into business. The power head is fine after many years and plenty of abuse. However, the blower only lasted one year with light use (plastic housing wore out on bottom of impeller) and the hedge trimmer never cut well.

I have the Echo PAS system with 5 different attachments, works great 97% of the time; occasionally when I swith attachments something doesn't line up, and it takes several attempts to work properly.

Just like you said Daryl..
I have the Ryobi from before I went into business.. Don't have the money just YET to buy the seperate tools, but 1 thing at a time...
It works fine for now, but hope by next summer to have individual items.. :)

If you have an attachment that is moving around, it's because it's not tight enough. I have the same problem with my edging attachment. These attachments are made of aluminum. Usually in most cases, the point of entry for the attachment is made of steel causing wear over time. With my edger, I take some clear packing tape and wrap it around (once or twice) the end that goes into the power head. Then when I tighten the thing down it stay's in place.

I have 2 of those Ryobi units. I have the line trimmers for both, edger, brush cutter, and tilling attachment. They work just fine and start on the first or second pull. Believe me, the tilling attachment puts the powerhead through it's paces and it won't die. The reason I have 2, I misaligned the shaft while doing a customers property and had to get a new one quick. The shafts are only $20 and easy to replace but had to order it.

I have some of them Ryobi's. The power head doesn't last me any time at all, gives me trouble starting. What a waste of money. Bought a stihl trimmer, love it. Anybody wanna buy a bunch of attachments for the Ryobi? The edger has never been used.
