This was at the beginning of the year. I mow the same way 3 times in a row to get the stripes ingrained. I then mow 90 to that 3 times. Then I alternate for the rest of the year.

Sorry for the bad pics...hard to get a good angle on the field. I know they're not perfect, but it's a work-in-progress over the year...I hope I can do better next week.

Looks good. What is the width of the deck you are using. It looks small but I think that is just because it is such a big area and the picture is from kind of far....but it looks good just the same. How many square feet is that area..any idea?

It's a Scag Tiger Cub 52." The company last year had a 72" and it looked a lot better.

My guess it's about 120-140 yards long and 40-50 yards wide...but I might be way off.

Here's the drainage basin at the end of the field...forgot to put it on the first time. It's impossible to get straight lines with it, so I figured I'd just follow the curve and make the best of it.

Yeah, I really like that machine compared to the Exmarks I've run.

Also, I guess I should have mentioned...this is my work, but I sold about 90% of my business and now I'm a foreman at a large landscape/excavation company. This is their job with their equipment, but my work.

Not sure if that changes your opinions or not.

The point of a stripe thread is a compilation of stripes. Not all stripes will stand out like those on a perfect lawn... I also don't see why it matters if "part timers" are posting pictures of their work. It sounds that you e-thugs get off by pretending to better than everyone else. Post pictures or have useful comments to the thread or GTFO. The last stripe thread was approx 40 pages long with stripes good and bad.

Yeah it got late...fast! Funny thing is, blowing grass in the street is one of my biggest pet peeves. Good thing is, i have all 5 accounts on that street and the lot acrossed from that yard is an empty lot so I get to blow the clippings into there. Looks great after all said and done.

Damn! memory not totally shot yet. OK pitrack, now try throwing down some curved stripes on that (which I assume is your) property, and THEN throw an opposing curve with a double cut, and the boaters will really have a cool view. I did it tonight on a corner condo, but no camera and getting dark. I'll post one when I get a chance. Start at the pine by the lake and curve it toward the house, slightly. Will looke awesome on that nice spring turf.

Hm good idea but the pine is on the neighbor's property. That's not my house, just one I mow weekly. Going to do a few tomorrow I'll try to snap a few more pics.

Thank you. All I meant to do was share my enthusiasm. I check stripe threads all the time with the hope that I'll see someone that just kills it..like that bearded guy with the dixie a few years back. Every guy out there works their azz off and has tremendous pride in what they do..no disrespect.

I have an Exmark Lazer Z60 with the Triton deck and a striper kit, but I am not getting the kind of stripes that I see posted. I have tried adjusting the striper roller, letting the grass grow taller, but still am not getting the results that I'd like or that I see everywhere.

I have tried adjusting the deck height to have some rake, but have not found the solution to getting better stripes.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried sticking with two patterns and alternating each week? Cutting taller doesn't always mean better stripes.

Alot is also dependant on grass type, lawn health, and the way the picture is taken.

The grass is fescue and the yard is on a regular fertilization program and is pretty healthy. That being said, I will try mowing the same directions a couple of times and see if that doesn't help out.

I only do 2 directions in nearly every situation and rotate every week...sometimes only 1 if the area can't be mowed two ways. Helps them stay pronounced all year.

That stone looks awe-fully old and important. Who is your tenant there? some cemeteries are hard to get good stripes in.

In the capital district people want bagging also. I think it is when you have a 20x50 lot and you actually want to use it you want it bagged. when you have 4 acres you can't afford to have it bagged....

I got a mag sign on the truck for now. I've been meaning to get a sign on the back of the trailer. Its open so thats about the only spot for one. I want to get the glass on the back side and rear done, but I worry if i did if it could be read. Long name. Idk but I'll get something done sometime. The only areas I don't stripe are small HOA backyards and side yards and some tiny commercials. I'm more concerned with keeping the clippings out of beds, off cars, off siding, etc than I am with stripes in those areas.

I have a lawn with some better stripes but i cant get them off my phone. I had to quit a job the other day because the lady wanted to know why my mower was leaving these stripes in her lawn and she did not want that. She would follow me around the yard when i was trimming and pointing things out that where pointless.

Those cuts look suburb especially the first one. What mower are you using and stripe methods if any?

Exmark Lazers, and the only method I use is changing the pattern every week and driving as straight as I can.

Just curious: if at the end of the first run, you did the adjoining strip in reverse (so that your mower was always facing the same way), would there be no stripes (except for wheel marks)? Might be handy for a customer who for some reason didn't want stripes. (Yes, I know, the front of the deck should be a smidge lower than the back.)

Not only will it still stripe, but it'll look worse because oftentimes when in reverse, decks don't cut as well and will leave more stragglers, plus some decks won't discharge as well in reverse so you may have a "windrow" of un-dispersed grass, plus it will take super long because you can't go as fast in reverse, plus it'll look like crap because it's super tough to go backwards as straight as forward, and finally unless you had mirrors, you'd kill your back and neck turning around that much.

Tim, I'm wondering what causes the stripes if it's not the way the mower's facing. Surely it can't be the direction it's moving because ground-speed would be negligable compared to blade-speed.

The airflow under the deck will lay the grass down no matter if you're going forward or backwards.

Hello, first post here. Sun reflection is what makes the stripes stand out, right. So, do stripes show better if you mow East to West or North to South opposed to say NW to SE. May be a silly question, but I asked it anyway. Oh yeah, nice lookin' yards guys! thanks

A couple of minor comments.

1. The larger the property the more I prefer my tractor instead of my Grasshopper -- which is much more agile and therefore harder to keep on a long straight line.

2. Clients don't appreciate striping, thinking it's like wheel marks so when I get a chance I mention that I don't charge extra for it, or that other operators ask me how I do it.

my customers love the stripes! they feel like they are getting their lawn cut just like a large company would have their lawn cut. I do agree with u though, i do not charge extra for striping

Hi, I'm new to this site and was told you can make your own striping kit. Is there anyone out that can guide me on how to make one, or direct me to somewhere that can? I can't seem to find one on the internet. Thanx for any help that is out there.

Here is mine after 3 times mowing since I made a PVC roller for my mower. I think it is doing well, although I will play around with the pitch some more. Thanks for all of the striping ideas that I found on here! It was almost dark when I took this pic, what do you think...........
