View Full Version : Where do you buy columns for pergolas

I'm assuming many of you guys build pergolas, as we do, from time to time. They seem to be very popular with paver patios. We do several each year and get requests for them a lot.

When you build a pergola with the more rounded columns (see photo below) where do you buy those columns? And are they just a facade that is slipped over a 4"x4" or 6"x6" post? Or are they actually built to support weight on their own. I saw some at Lowe's the other day. Already white. Made of vinyl I think. And I think those were solid, not slip overs. But I am curious how most people build these and where to get these kind of columns from.

Most of the time we use permacast columns. They come in square or round and we slip them over a 6x6 that is in the ground.

I haven't done anything with round columns in a while, but the last time I did we bought from this manufacturer through our local lumber supplier: http://polyclassiccolumns.com/

Even if the column is rated as structural, we usually do a 4x4 inside just because it makes the attachments way easier.
