I mainly do the 1 acre plus lawns but this year Ive expanded into a couple of the little villages with 2 little 10-15000 sq ft lawns and I have a large frame 60" Toro 29hp ZTR. I did the larger of the 2 new small lawns, went pretty slow, trimmed pretty slow & blew off the walk when I was done and it took me 15 minutes. Thats with the blower taking me a few minutes to get running. It was pretty awkward using the big Z on that lawn. Kind of thinking that the customers could frown upon the whole giant mower 15 minute 40 dollar mow. I would like a 48ish stander but like I said, only have the 2 small lawns and a pool area and 2 hills I would otherwise use a stander. Even used is kind of tough, especially when you need a dump truck, excavator, skid steer also lol. What does everyone think? Anyone mow tiny lawns with big mowers?

a 42" would be good because it can fit through most back gates

I have a 54 z and 36 WB. If the z fits I use it as long as it won't tear. Only use 36 for hills and gates. And 40 is lowest I go even if it takes 15 mins. It has to be worth driving and unloading.

neither have gates or any issues fitting anywhere its just that the lawns are so tiny. 40 is the lowest i go too, with gas over 4 it has to be that way.

This is the reason why you are better off using a 4 thousand dollar Wb for 20 minutes than a 10 thousand dollar Ztr for 15, because it is not cost effective to
run a 10,000 dollar machine for 15 minutes.

I use my 60" Z on small 8K properties and have a smaller WB on the trailer. The customer shouldn't be concered about how long it takes, but the quality of the job when finished.

No one uses small mowers here (except home owners). Never see a WB but most lots are at least 20,000 sq ft up to several acres.

$4k for a mower he would use 30 mins a week, when he can get it done with his bigger mower he already has is not cost effective to me.

At $40 a mow, buying that $4k walkbehind would mean he would be loosing money on the lawns for over 3 years.

Actually with the increased productivity in 15 mins vs 20 mins it works out to an increase of $28 an hour and a decrease of $2-3 per hour in equipment costs.

Good to know other guys are operating the same way though.

When I upgraded last year, I chose a 48 walk behind. Most of my yards are in and out in 30 with it and I can get in all but two gates.

The machine you choose is your personal choice based on how your business runs.

I'd love to be in and out in 15!!!

34" residential zero just for very small back yards with narrow gates. I know, I know. But it sure is nice.

It's called being effecient. Sounds like you are. So don't feel ashamed about being so quick.

I mow plenty of lawns where the 60" only needs one pass on both sides of the house 3-5 in the back and maybe 5 up front. I run my mower on average 4-8 minutes a lawn here. Most guys have at least a 52" which is what I now have.

Dido! I've never had a complaint. If they ever said anything, my reply would be something like yeah it only takes me 15-20 minutes but I have 10K in equipment to do it with. Efficiency costs money.

I see less of them every year, but I would not be without a 36" walk behind. You can use it pratically anywhere.

We use 36" or 48" Turf Tracers on those smaller properties. We do lots of them at about 20 minutes a pop. I don't really care about a perception that we can finish quickly. Most of our customers are not home when we are there anyway. Besides, it's the finished product that matters. The Turf Tracers do a great job.

I know the feeling but use what you got. If they say anything this a response I heard one time and I keep it for times like this. Mr customer your value is not in the time it takes me to care for your property, but in the time that you save by not doing it yourself. it means f off I just saved you 40mins, but in a very nice professional way.

Where I am there are a lot of LCOs that only use 60 inch Zs and a string trimmer anywhere that won't fit. I use a 48 inch WB and a 52 inch Z. I don't have any lawns where I need anything smaller at the moment but I'll load up the 21 incher when necessary.

I agree WB for the 10k sq ft properties, especially if they are nice lawns. A Z, even with careful steering, will still leave turf divots.

Adding 4k in equipment for 2yds that are not the norm in his area. Cost effective? Yea right.
