Is GM planning on making medium duty trucks again? Ive heard rumors of them making class 4 and 5 trucks that are smaller like the F450 and F550s in a couple years maybe. What have you all heard??

are you talking about 4500 and 5500? becuase i think you order those. im not 100% sure but call your local GM dealer they should be able to tell you.

No you can't order them GM stopped making them. I think the last year they were made was 2008. It's a shame too. We have four of them at the EMS I work for. They are the best ambulances we have ever had. Last year the ambulance builder said GM was going to start building a 4500 and 5500 that looked like the 3500s. I havn't heard any more about it. It may just be a rumor. I hope they build it.

I've read on articles GM was thinking of building a 4500HD and 5500HD on the Silverado and Sierra platforms but then I read an article in January stating GM is going to bring back the old 4500 and 5500 series (not sure about the 6500-8500 models) and I also talked to a guy that worked at Flint Truck and Bus and he told me GM is bringing back the old Topkick/Kodiak series in the next year or two. One of the articles stated that they feel the don't need a smaller 4500HD/5500HD Medium Duty because of the quote "Amazing capabilities of their new 3500HD". Yeah, that truck is so amazing at only a 13000 GVW. The biggest complaint I've heard is that the old 4500 and 5500 are too big, everyone wants a F450/F550 sized truck. Look at how big a seller the old C3500HD was. Shoot it would be so easy for GM to make a 4500HD/5500HD Silverado and Sierra: they got the frame, the engine, the tranny, the cab, all they need is just some heavier duty higher ratio axle, extra suspension and 19.5" tires. That could an awesome truck, I'd love to see that, but nope, brainless GM at work again.
I do like the old Topkick/Kodiak series, too, but I'd just rather see a smaller Medium Duty the on the Silverado and Sierra platform. That whats most people want.

my dad and uncle run an autobody/mechanical and they switch from a 7.3 f450 to a 6.6 c4500. it's better in every aspect. and what's the big deal with the size of the truck? it turns better than the fords or the dodges.

up here,the issue with the big gm trucks was they are commercial use trucks,sold at a dealership that sells cars .The Ford dealership has parts and service available untill midnight every night ,while the gm guys have no parts or service past 5 pm .I liked the topkicks ,great engine,nice riding truck etc ,but depending on how much you need your truck in the morning ,there might be a better choice elsewhere .

I have a buddy that does alarms and stereos and stuff like that anyways hes had me down at his place before when they would get gmc/chevy 4500-5500 pickup trucks. And it was an eye opener to find the interior was 6 feet tall and the seats were like 3 feet apart. You not only could walk inside the cab I did the thing was huge the mirrors were like 4 feet tall. So I didn't even know they had been discontinued but this wouldn't of mattered either way when I bought my new ram 4500 this year size was a definite deal breaker. I bought my truck as a lawn cutting truck with the ability to take on the heavy parts of our trade that my 2 3500s fall way short of. And while she does stand taller then my 99 ram 3500 it's not that much but when you look at the frame you really see the difference. But when both dodge and ford can make medium trucks about 25% smaller then gmc there is no reason they can not unless being over sized is the selling point.
