Here are a lot of after pictures of a job I just finished up yesterday (mostly still have a bit more to do but that's it for now). Some of the dye washed from the mulch but the customer is having a get together this weekend and he didn't really care if it washed a little.

No before pictures of this place but a ton of work went into this place over this Spring and last Fall (I'd say in the 75 to 100 man hours range)

Ha, I like how the river rock looks against brown/black mulch plus the rock keeps the mulch from washing away - I like the added benefit!

The one mulch job I am doing now is a normal mowing customer and the wife likes to do yardwork but can not do a whole lot so she laid black plastic so there is no weeding and there is no edging. I love this type of mulching!

There's a little sidewalk staining from the dye, we started moving the mulch then it absolutely poured for an hour or so, made things very messy and miserable.

The edge along the pavement isn't great, couldn't go deep as the blacktop is actually falling apart, I'm hoping that they get all of that replaced soon with concrete!

Here are some pictures of a project that will be on going and will depend on their cash flow... The overall idea is to rip everything out (gravel, sidewalk, shrubs) and put sod down and maybe accent the lawn with some mulch beds. At least that's how I think it should go!

I told them before we started the project that I was worried about how extreme the shade is in this area. I'm honestly just giving them what they want, hence the test patch of grass. I appreciate the advice.

Regardless though... everything is coming out and something is going in so I'm not sure what the final product will look like.

Wow... been very busy doing small landscaping jobs so I haven't updated this in a while... I wish I would take the time to take pictures of every job I do - I always forget the camera and get into the work so quickly that I forget to take before pictures.

Here are the after pictures from the river rock job, the mulch is lumpy because the dog had pretty much destroyed it before I even finished the job... it's too bad because it looked pretty nice after I had the mulch down and smooth.

Ended up using 16 tons of river rock, quite a doozie!

Perennials, I would've personally pulled them out but she wanted to keep them. Sad since it would've looked a lot cleaner if I pulled everything and did some planting (large space below the yews I don't particularly enjoy). But hey, it's an improvement from what it looked like.

And thanks Tim, appreciate it man!

Oh it's moving but barely... after this mulch job that I'm working on I really only have one "large" job left. After that it's just some small weeding jobs and a few odds and ends. Haven't actually booked any new work in almost 2 weeks now so August is looking pretty bad at this point.

I feel your pain! I have been taking a few days off at a time then doing one or two small jobs but its nothing compared to mulching every day like I was. I am ready for the grass to start growing again so I can be back at full capacity. I did just possibly pick up another dunkin donuts in our area so that's a plus but its still an every other week mow. I love doing this work but slow times do sure suck!

Basically just pulled weeds, edged a little, mulched and even did a little grass seed.

The homeowners had already "done" the front so they didn't really want to have that done although I would have spend the extra $200-300 to finish it out. It wasn't edged, lumpy and that crappy bagged mulch from Home Depot, oh well!

Thanks tailboard... the side of the house there was a ton of Thistle but the weeds that I ended up putting grass seed down on I'm actually not sure what that was (not well versed in the weeds category). Kinda hard to tell where I did the grass seed as it's covered with mushroom manure but it's the part down below.

Here are some before pictures of a job I started today...

Details are...

Turning this 25'x25' area into a garden but only up to the planting stage... Beds will be going around the entire perimeter with some sod in the middle and a small stepping stone walkway. Used a Dingo today to remove around 6-8 inches of material (mostly driveway gravel and large stones) and will be adding in around 10 yards of topsoil for now and maybe more later after the soil compresses. Exciting project and the first time I've used a Dingo, neat little machines and easy to use!

Hi Guys,

I landscape up in the Vancouver area of Canada and enjoy seeing what other guys are doing around North America.

We do maintenance as well as installations and I was curious about the river rock perimeter along the turf edges of the bedding renovations you been showing us. From a maintenance perspective, would it be better to put a discrete edging between the rock and the turf so the turf won't "creep" into the rock? I've been using a flexible, black vinyl edging for many years that takes edging the turf along bedding completely out of the maintenance equation.

Just thought I'd ask. Love the pics and your customers are obviously getting a good product for their money!

Cheers,

Thanks Barry for the comments!

As I look back I do see an actual trenched edge between the rock and turf might be a better idea however I haven't had a problem with the turf creeping yet. I'm able to line trim the edge so it stays crisp.

I don't use black plastic edging as I think it looks cheap and tacky. Its either the stone edging or a natural turf edge.

Nice work! I too like the rock/mulch mix. Have a few locations that I have suggested HO's do this, but no takers yet. How much if any is the markup (that you personally do) on installing the rock as compared to mulch? Not looking for specifics, but I would assume it costs the HO a little more.

I know the product you're thinking of and I agree that if the edging isn't installed correctly it can look bad. When we do it you can't even tell it's there, unless you walk right up to it and look down on it directly. There is no top bead. On the sites where I've implemented the edging, my man hours for trimming have been "trimmed" by 60%.

Keep up the good work!

Here are the after shots from the pictures I posted yesterday...

Natural walkway is what she wanted, no gravel or sand or anything so that's what she got. I also did not put the plants where they are and will not be doing the mulch/planting for her. All I really did was the brunt of the labor by removing 6-8 inches of gravel and adding topsoil with the walkway and sod... The edge I made wasn't up to my usual par but it'll have to do for now.

Nice work! I too like the rock/mulch mix. Have a few locations that I have suggested HO's do this, but no takers yet. How much if any is the markup (that you personally do) on installing the rock as compared to mulch? Not looking for specifics, but I would assume it costs the HO a little more.

Thanks man and I love the green/light stone/dark mulch contrast, it really stands out and if your edge is good then it really pops and looks nice!

I don't markup anything, I have an hourly rate and I stick to it unless it's absolutely back breaking... the only thing I do is the small 10% discount I get from the suppliers I do not pass on to the consumer.

It's for the dog even though the dog is a Golden Retriever... way too small of an area for the dog (it's only 25x25 with barely any grass). She's not exactly doing everything in a smart order or anything but hey... they don't want to hear what I would do if I owned the house.

Yep if he doesn't sell the house first (since meeting him a divorce process has started...)

I crap you not, it's about a 45 degree hill or steeper so it won't be fun to edge or push wheel barrows around on it.

Did a lot of weed pulling, shrub pruning and tree pruning elsewhere so hopefully I keep this one for mulch in the spring and probably more bed renovations.

Here's a project for a buddy of mine... don't have any before pictures but all that was in each bed were two Rhododendrons and weeds... There was a 6"-18" wooden tie wall bordering the sidewalks/driveway and lava rock that was also removed.

Put in 3 Azaleas that will bloom white, 7 Golden Arborvitaes and 3 Barberries... shooting for low maintenance while providing some color.
