I was at my dealer today looking at honda's hrx217 line of mowers. He had 2011 models with the hydro drive and a few older models that were still hrx217 but they had a 3 speed transmission. The machines are brand new. Does anyone know anything about these 3 speed transmissions on the honda hrx217 models? The hydro is selling for $1099 and the 3 speed is going for $899. Thanks.

If you do a search, the consensus seems to be that the the 3 speed tranny is not as reliable as the hydro. I have the hydro and haven't had any issues with it yet. I purchased it about 1 year ago.

Wow, your Canadian dollar really doesn't buy much!
The HRX217HXA is $699 at Home Depot in the US, but I thought all the HRX217's were hydro, and the HRX216's were 3 speed. Maybe I've got it wrong. Could be price difference be for the Blade Brake Clutch. That is one of the best features ever invented! Way worth it.

You're right there. Things are very expensive here in Canada compared to what you pay in the U.S.

Anybody else have any experience with the 3 speed honda hrx217?
